David Beckham will have at least one bragging right over Landon Donovan when he joins his Galaxy teammate for preseason next month.
The English midfielder, heading into the final year of his five-year Major League Soccer contract, placed much higher -- 19th -- on Bloomberg Businessweek.com's “Power 100” list, released Thursday, of the most powerful U.S.-centric athletes.
Donovan, the only other soccer player on the list, was 40th.
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning took over the top spot from golfer Tiger Woods, who fell to third after being No. 1 in the first four annual surveys. Snowboarder Shaun White is in the second slot. Golfer Phil Mickelson is fourth, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is fifth, and the rest of the top 10 are Boston Celtics center Shaquille O'Neal, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, cyclist Lance Armstrong, St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols and short-track speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno.
Lakers stars Kobe Bryant (14th) and Pau Gasol (60th) also made the list.
