Scottish League Cup Semifinal Match Predictions ? 30 January 2011
Gregg Berhalter dishes on Edson Buddle's new home
And nobody at L.A. understands Buddle's situation more so than Berhalter, whose 15-year European career included stints in Germany's 2. Bundesliga with Energie Cottbus and TSV 1860 Munich.
Here's what Berhalter had to say about FC Ingolstadt, Buddle's new team: “Ingolstadt has Audi behind them, and they want to make a push to stay in the league and then build from there. They're investing money in that.”
And about Germany's No. 2 league: “It's probably the best second division in the world. I can't think of one that's bigger. Because the stadiums are big, you have some massive clubs in there, the attendance is probably the highest of any second division, so it's good. You have competitive games. The whole setup is very, very professional, and he'll really enjoy that side of it.”
RUNNING MAN: Midfielder Bryan Jordan (Temple City/Temple City HS) is in New York for Friday's Millrose Games indoor track and field meet. He'll be racing in the Super 60 II, a 60-meter dash featuring athletes from different sports.
DTotD: Goalkeeper sent off in first college match
This University of Minnesota Morris freshman backup goalkeeper continues the long tradition of footballers getting sent off in their debut. It even happened to Lionel Messi in his first appearance for Argentina.
Despite that tradition, this keeper's failed attempt to clear and handsy attempt to bring down his opponent probably won't get him in the starting XI again soon.
Oh, and it doesn't look like there were many people at this match, but everyone who was sounds like they were hoping the players would be fed to lions at some point. Wow.

Best Bets Jan. 28/29: What to watch/where to go
FRIDAY, JAN. 28
- TELEVISION
GERMAN BUNDESLIGA
Hannover 96 at Bayer Leverkusen
ESPN Deportes, 11:25 a.m.
If Borussia Dortmund doesn't win Germany's top league -- and we think it's a done deal -- then second-place Bayer Leverkusen (10-3-6) or third-place Hannover (11-7-1), with Americans Steve Cherundolo and DaMarcus Beasley, are the best bets to snag the trophy.
Guadalajara at Estudiantes Tecos
Galavision, 6:10 p.m.
Crosstown battle between suburban Zapopan's sides could be a good one. Chivas rarely wins or loses, and Estudiantes already has beaten reigning champ Monterrey.
SUDAMERICANA SUB-20
Colombia vs. Paraguay
ESPN Deportes, 11 p.m.
The final group-stage clash at South America's under-20 championship could determine two berths in the six-nation final round. Colombia needs only a draw to advance; Paraguay might require a victory.

Ecuador vs. Bolivia, ESPN Deportes, 3:55 p.m.

Omar Gonzalez, Juan Agudelo Among U.S. Players to Watch Against Chile
Filed under: Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, New York Red Bulls, San Jose Earthquakes
It's all-too easy to get caught up in the post-World Cup hangover. When the words "four-year cycle" are thrown around, the slow climb toward Brazil 2014 can feel like an eternity. But this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup is a crucial event. Although the regional tournament is a biennial affair, many countries send their best personnel only to the edition that occurs the year after the World Cup, when a berth in the next Confederations Cup is at stake.
The very youthful pool of players summoned to Carson, Calif., by U.S. coach Bob Bradley ahead of Saturday's friendly against Chile (10 p.m. ET, TeleFutura) clearly indicates that he has one eye on the more-distant future. But Bradley surely will be using the other to evaluate certain players for his 23-man Gold Cup roster.

Galaxy duo on Businessweek's 'Power' list
David Beckham will have at least one bragging right over Landon Donovan when he joins his Galaxy teammate for preseason next month.
The English midfielder, heading into the final year of his five-year Major League Soccer contract, placed much higher -- 19th -- on Bloomberg Businessweek.com's “Power 100” list, released Thursday, of the most powerful U.S.-centric athletes.
Donovan, the only other soccer player on the list, was 40th.
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning took over the top spot from golfer Tiger Woods, who fell to third after being No. 1 in the first four annual surveys. Snowboarder Shaun White is in the second slot. Golfer Phil Mickelson is fourth, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is fifth, and the rest of the top 10 are Boston Celtics center Shaquille O'Neal, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, cyclist Lance Armstrong, St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols and short-track speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno.
Lakers stars Kobe Bryant (14th) and Pau Gasol (60th) also made the list.

Mexico sets San Diego date
Mexico's national team is coming to Southern California in March, just not to L.A. El Tri will face Venezuela in San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium on March 29 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale Friday through Ticketmaster.
It's the third date on the team's annual U.S. tour, organized by Soccer United Marketing, the marketing arm of Major League Soccer, and it comes on a FIFA international-fixture date, so, theoretically, Mexico will have access to its biggest stars, such as Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Giovani Dos Santos, who play in England.
Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre will make his debut as Mexico coach in the tour opener, Feb. 9 against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Atlanta.
Mexico has played 19 games at Qualcomm since the early 1990s, going 13-2-4 and averaging about 40,000 in attendance, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. El Tri last played in San Diego in June 2009, a 0-0 draw with Guatemala.
Mexico's 2011 U.S. tour (all times Pacific):
Feb. 9 vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina at Atlanta, 5 p.m.
March 26 vs. Paraguay at Oakland, 2 p.m.
March 29 vs. Venezuela at San Diego, 8 p.m.

Omar Salgado Rides Change of Heart to Top of MLS SuperDraft
Filed under: Portland Timbers, Vancouver Whitecaps FC
BALTIMORE -- With the first pick of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, and the first pick in franchise history, the Vancouver Whitecaps selected a player who may not even be eligible to play for them until September. While the U.S. has enjoyed several important victories over Mexico on the field in recent years, last summer ago it scored one off it.
Omar Salgado, then a 16-year-old star of the future with Chivas de Guadalajara and a veteran of Mexico's junior national team program, decided to switch his international allegiance to the U.S.
Born in El Paso to Mexican parents, the forward was eligible to represent both countries.

Edson Buddle Leaves Los Angeles Galaxy for Germany's FC Ingolstadt

Edson Buddle's desire to play abroad has led him to a club that may be a step down from his MLS team.Rather than playing alongside the likes of Landon Donovan and David Beckham, Buddle will be suiting up for a club barely clinging to its place in the German second division.
FC Ingolstadt, known in soccer circles for all of a week as the site of Freddy Adu's latest desperate trial, announced Monday that it has signed the MLS MVP finalist on a free transfer.
The duration of the deal wasn't announced. Our guess: He'll be there six months. Here's why:

Impotent CONCACAF To Plead For Fourth World Cup Spot
Filed under: FIFA World Cup, International Soccer, US Soccer
Remember back in high school when student government candidates would promise things they had absolutely no hope of delivering -- a soda machine in the cafeteria, the extra parking spaces, early release on football Fridays?Well, it appears that Jack Warner is running for class president.
The December World Cup vote exposed the CONCACAF chief and his fellow FIFA executive committee members, American Chuck Blazer and Guatemala's Rafael Salguero, as nothing more than small-time gangsters, able to hold sway in their own little fiefdom but inconsequential at the varsity level.

DTotD: Kevin Muscat's latest (and last?) kamikaze tackle
Melbourne Victory captain Kevin Muscat was once described as the "most hated man in football" by former Birmingham City player Martin Grainger in 2000 and during Saturday's A-League match against Melbourne Heart, he once again proved why.
With the score at 2-2 in the 79th minute, Muscat threw himself at Heart's Adrian Zahra with an ugly high challenge that violently flipped the 20-year-old. Muscat was quickly shown a red card and Zahra had to be carried off the pitch.
Though Zahra didn't suffer any complete tears of ligaments in his knee and won't require surgery, he does have damage to multiple ligaments and will miss the rest of the season. On Sunday, the 37-year-old Muscat expressed remorse and apologized. From the Sydney Morning Herald:
"My number one concern - my only concern - is the welfare of Adrian," Muscat asserted. "It was an incident that I deeply regret. It was a mistimed tackle - dreadfully mistimed - but at no point did I have any intent to injure the player.
''In the next couple of days I will take the opportunity to try and contact him and pass on my sentiments, if he'll accept them. [...]
"I accept everything that's going to be coming my way in relation to bans and suspensions and also criticism of my character, my performance, all that comes with it."
Asked about retirement, Muscat said: "I haven't had a chance to contemplate, or think about it. Unfortunately I mistimed a tackle terribly. Maybe the game's telling me it's passed me by?"
Hopefully Muscat will be given a very long ban to give him ample time to contemplate that question.
Samuel Eto'o had a good time on Chiambretti Night
Inter striker Samuel Eto'o was a guest on Chiambretti Night -- the Italian interview show that takes breaks from all the talking to have models give the guests sexy dances -- Thursday and it appears he enjoyed himself.
Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Fabio Capello are three football men who have been subjected to the program's special format in the past, all of whom produced hilarious reactions all their own. Mourinho went the stoic "I'm trying not to look" route, while Ancelotti let his eyebrow do the talking, and Capello just looked uncomfortable.
Dancing around Eto'o was Venezuelan model Ainett Stephens. And I think it's safe to say Samuel thought she was pretty great. More photos right this way...
Samuel looked up at Ainett with a big smile on his face and hearts clouding his vision...
And then his eyes moved down...
Clearly, Samuel Eto'o enjoys being Samuel Eto'o.

US Ties Chile, 1-1, as Young Strikers Juan Agudelo and Teal Bunbury Impress
Filed under: International Soccer, US Soccer, Colorado Rapids, D.C. United, Kansas City Wizards, New York Red Bulls, San Jose Earthquakes
For the second time in two national team appearances, teen sensation Juan Agudelo entered as a substitute and made the difference for the Americans. Two months ago in South Africa, his 85th-minute goal was the difference in 1-0 win over the hosts. On Saturday night in Southern California, the 18-year-old drew the penalty kick that lifted the U.S. to a 1-1 tie with Chile.
Fellow reserve Teal Bunbury confidently converted the penalty in the 74th minute (video below), but it was Agudelo's enterprising and incisive run through the heart of the Chilean defense that was the highlight.
The play started with a long low pass from central defender Tim Ream, and Agudelo, who had entered the game along with Bunbury just 15 minutes earlier, unhinged the opposition with a give-and-go with midfielder Alejandro Bedoya. Dribbling into the penalty area at speed, Agudelo was upended by Chile's Sebastián Toro.

Andy Gray Fired Over Sexist Comments
Filed under: English Premier League, Sports Business and Media
LONDON (AP) -- One of British soccer's leading television commentators was fired Tuesday, a day after being taken off the air and temporarily suspended for making sexist remarks about a female match official.Andy Gray, the face of Sky Sports' soccer coverage for the past two decades, was dismissed by the broadcaster after "new evidence of unacceptable and offensive behavior" that took place off-air last month.
The former Scotland striker and broadcast colleague Richard Keys had been reprimanded and removed from duty Monday for making derogatory comments about lineswoman Sian Massey, former referee Wendy Toms and West Ham executive Karren Brady.
"Andy Gray's contract has been terminated for unacceptable behavior," Sky Sports managing director Barney Francis said Tuesday. "We have no hesitation in taking this action after becoming aware of new information today."

And now: The condescending ball boy
"I hope there's something else you're actually good at."
The ball boy revolt has been going on for some time now. From the kid who tossed the ball too high for Jens Lehmann's liking to that other kid who tried to get Anderlecht goalkeeper Silvio Allaj Proto to fight him, ball boys around the world have doing little things to show footballers who's boss. But never have they been quite so heartless as this young man who stood over Panama's Gabriel Torres following his side's Central American Cup semifinal loss to Costa Rica. On penalties. In front of a home crowd.
This ball boy looks down on the already crushed Torres with his hands on his hips and scorn emanating from his face like a laser beam capable of inflicting a terminal illness. Who knows what he actually said to Torres, but judging by the look on the player's face, it was probably insensitive and astoundingly cruel.
The ball boys are an icy breed. Their rule is a merciless one.

If there's a surefire cure for a lack of playing time, it's cup competition. Just ask Jonathan Spector. In November, the American utility man returned from the furthest end of West Ham's bench to notch a brace during the Hammers' 4-0 upset of Manchester United in the English League Cup quarterfinals.
Saturday, Spector accomplished a similar feat, making his first start since Dec. 18 and scoring the winning goal as West Ham defeated Barnsley, 2-0, in the FA Cup third round. The three goals have been the only tallies of Spector's professional career.
The 24-year-old's strike highlighted a fruitful weekend for Americans in FA Cup play.

Villarreal's Cani scores a fantastic goal from the halfway line
When he's not throwing water bottles at Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, Villarreal's Cani shows his awareness and ability by scoring from the halfway line against Osasuna. Only a few minutes after Osasuna equalized to make it 1-1 just after halftime, Cani launched this perfectly placed ball over the head of backtracking goalkeeper Ricardo to put Villarreal back on top on its way to a 4-2 win on Saturday.
[Rewind video: Basketball coach hits blindfolded half-court shot]
Cani wouldn't have even been eligible for this match had the red card he was shown for throwing that bottle at the celebrating Mourinho from the Villrreal bench last Sunday not been reduced to a yellow card on appeal. But to Ricardo's chagrin, he played and he did this.
Maybe next time Mourinho annoys Cani, he'll take advantage of this accuracy and kick a ball at him instead of tossing a bottle. Because there most definitely will be a next time.

Bunbury gets first U.S. goal, funniest goal call you'll hear today
Saturday night's friendly between the U.S. and Chile ended up being a predictably disjointed performance from a young U.S. side not used to playing together. But the night was salvaged when Teal Bunbury scored a 74th minute penalty kick that would end the match at 1-1 and produce a meme that will probably follow the 20-year-old throughout his career.
Of course, the final score didn't matter and the match was really all about getting a look at some of the U.S.'s more promising young talents. Telefutura's Spanish-speaking match commentator Pablo Ramirez stole the show, though, with his little celebratory ditty for the Canadian-born Sporting KC striker.
"I like that Boon-boo-ree -- I like that Boon-boo-ree! Teal Boonbooree!" Ramirez sang, sounding just as pleased with himself for coming up with that little tune as he was with the goal itself. Meanwhile, Bunbury and Juan Agudelo, who earned the penalty in the first place, did an out-of-sync rendition of The Dougie to complete the awesomely hilarious scene.
Understandably inspired by this, Jason Davis from Match Fit USA and Sporting KC conspired to produce a remix of Ramirez's call set to the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow." Rock your shoulders to its splendor right this way...
So there you go. Now you have a new ringtone.
