Journalists from around the world packed into the press room at Real Madrid's training complex on Friday, desperate for a few Jose Mourinho barbs to help them add even more unnecessary hype to the four Clasicos in 18 days. And like the true showman that he is, instead of simply talking to those quote hungry journos, Mourinho sat silent beside assistant coach Aitor Karanka, who spoke on his behalf. But the press didn't want to hear him gab about who knows what. So, there was a mass walkout upon the announcement that Mourinho wouldn't be speaking.
Said Karanka to the remaining members of the media hoping to coax a few words out of Mourinho (via the AP):
"Whenever the coach talks everything gets blown out of proportion. He doesn't want to be responsible for stoking tensions ahead of the match," Karanka said. "It's a way of working. It's not unusual that sometimes I come out. It's not a lack of respect toward anyone."
The Independent says that "more than 100 journalists and television crews from several different countries" left the room in a huff. Which is probably exactly what Mourinho wanted them to do.
This was the 11th time this season that Karanka handled a press conference for Mourinho, so that's nothing new. Jose sitting beside him while he does it, silently lording over the press is only something he did because they grumbled when told Karanka would come out alone. And once again, Jose proves that even with his mouth shut he can dominate a room.
