Best Bets July 20/21: What to watch, where to go

WEDNESDAY, JULY 20

  • TELEVISION

COPA AMERICA
Venezuela vs. Paraguay
Univision (KMEX/Channel 34), 5:30 p.m.

Nobody is claiming this edition of South America's nations championship has been particularly artful, but when the final four includes neither Argentina -- as host -- nor Brazil, it's something special. Chivas USA forward Alejandro Moreno looks to help Venezuela reach its soccer summit -- and a date Sunday with Uruguay -- with a semifinal victory.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
Columbus Crew at Galaxy
Prime Ticket, 7:30 p.m.
The Galaxy hasn't lost an MLS game in 2 months, 12 in all, yet Seattle (one point behind) is making a move to overtake L.A. in the Western Conference and Supporters' Shield races. The Crew, featuring locals Chad Marshall (Riverside) and Robbie Rogers (Palos Verdes/Huntington Beach), have quietly climbed to third place in the East, three points off the lead. Replay: 1 a.m.
Also
New England Revolution at D.C. United, MLS Direct Kick, 4:30 p.m.
FC Dallas at Toronto FC, MLS Direct Kick, 5 p.m.
New York Red Bulls at Colorado Rapids, MLS Direct Kick, 6:30 p.m.
Vancouver Whitecaps at San Jose Earthquakes, MLS Direct Kick, 7:30 p.m.

CLUB FRIENDLY
Manchester United (England) at Seattle Sounders
Fox Soccer Channel and Galavision, 7 p.m.
The hottest team in MLS takes on England's best, and it'll fill CenturyLink Field. Man United boss Alex Ferguson -- now the proud owner of a “Sir Alex” Sounders jersey -- expressed surprise and admiration upon hearing how many fans (36,000-plus) show up for every Seattle home game. Now he gets to experience American soccer's most European atmosphere.
Also
Guadalajara (Mexico) vs. Real Madrid (Spain), ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, 8 p.m.

  • ON LOCAL FIELDS

CLUB FRIENDLY
Guadalajara (Mexico) vs. Real Madrid (Spain)
Qualcomm Stadium (San Diego), 8 p.m.

Real Madrid was pretty spectacular in dismantling the Galaxy the other night at the Coliseum, but Guadalajara might be better equipped to give the mighty Spaniards a game. A sellout crowd in San Diego -- heavily pro-Chivas, we're betting -- will see if it's so.
TV: ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes
Also
New Zealand U-20 at Ventura County Fusion, Oxnard College, 12:30 p.m.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
Columbus Crew at Galaxy
Home Depot Center, 7:30 p.m.
That 12-game unbeaten streak the Galaxy is on is impressive, although only half of those are victories, and four of those wins came over 15 days the latter half of May. The Galaxy is on the verge of another streak: They've lost two in a row, in the U.S. Open Cup and in Saturday's friendly against Real Madrid.
