Rooney’s title-winning penalty spot turf reaches 1m on eBay

When Wayne Rooney scored a 73rd minute penalty to earn a 1-1 draw against Blackburn and seal Manchester United's record 19th league title in their second-to-last game of the Premier League season, Blackburn fan Eddie Maxwell saw an opportunity. So he got Blackburn's permission to dig up the Ewood Park penalty spot from which Rooney scored and put that hunk of earth up on eBay.

Says the auction page (sic'd):

Own the very spot whereWayne Rooney scored the penalty that gave man utd the 19th record title.

up for grabs is the Darwen End penalty spot from Ewood Park, Wayne Rooney was the last player to score at Ewood in the 2010/2011 season. The turf is in the same conditon as at the time of the match.

I was given permissonto lift the turf by the groundsman to raise funds for a local football team. (Blackburn Rovers are laying a new pitch this summer)

The turf is in a wooden planter ready to plant / transport, it is 100% authentic and will be provided with a letter / certificat of authenticity

All proceeds from this auction will go to a local football team.

This a genuine auction. please treat it with respect

buyer to collect, payment by paypal.

Unfortunately, this serious auction for what seems like a good cause might be the victim of some eBay shenanigans. After 216 bids, the price is up to 999,950.63 (as of this writing) and Maxwell has warned that "all bids that are deemed false have, and are being reported to, and actioned by Ebay." Then again, maybe Wayne Rooney himself really wants to hang this hunk of mud on his wall.
