U.S. will feature players with Mexican experience

MEXICO CITY -- The United States will face a crowd expected to approach 110,000, perhaps more, when it takes on Mexico in Wednesday night's friendly at iconic Estadio Azteca, as daunting a task as exists in international soccer. It's a huge showdown for the Americans, as is every game against their archrival, and they've brought in six players with advanced knowledge of the Mexican game and the men who will suit up for El Tri. That could be advantageous, but head coach Jurgen Klinsmann says the call-ups of the half-dozen from Liga MX -- Santos Laguna forward Herculez Gomez, Pachuca midfielder Jose Torres, Puebla winger DaMarcus Beasley, Club Tijuana midfielder Joe Corona and defender Edgar Castillo, and San Luis defender Michael Orozco Fiscal -- has less to do with where they play than with what they can provide for the U.

Wayne Rooney to miss at least four weeks with leg gash

Wayne Rooney didn't start in Manchester United's 3-2 win over Fulham, but after he did come on in the 68th minute, he ended up leaving on a stretcher. Rooney attempted to slide in and block a Hugo Rodallega shot from distance in added time, resulting in the Fulham man landing on Rooney's thigh and slicking it open.

Rooney stood up and held his bleeding thigh for all to see, but was eventually taken off on a stretcher. After the match, Alex Ferguson revealed the extent of the injury. From the London Evening Standard:

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It was a very bad one. He has gone to hospital. It looks like he will be out for four weeks."

Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa both started for Man United and both scored on their Old Trafford debut, making the loss of Rooney a bit easier for Ferguson to shrug off. The good news for Chicharito: he's now the fourth in line to start for the next few weeks!

UPDATE: Surgeons were "surprised" by how deep the six-inch gash on Rooney's thigh was. It's now being reported that he could miss up to two months.

How to completely mess up a one-on-one situation, by Udinese?s Pablo Armero

In Tuesday's Champions League playoff match between Udinese and Braga, Pablo Armero was given an absolutely golden chance to put the Italian side 2-0 ahead in a one-on-one with the Braga keeper. As you can see, it didn't go so well.

To make matters worse, Braga pulled level and the second-leg tie went to penalties. Udinese was defeated, 5-4, no thanks to a distinctly un-Pirlo attempt at a Panenka penalty by Brazilian midfielder Maicosuel. Check out that miss below...

Dimitar Berbatov reassures his fans, has his agent make dinner for him

With four days left before the transfer window shuts, Dimitar Berbatov's still has yet to leave Manchester United for a club that actually appreciates his goal-scoring promiscuity. And just as word of a potential transfer to Fiorentina starts to get serious, Wayne Rooney has gone down with an injury that could shackle The Continental to Man United for a bit longer.

But as the clock ticks, The Berba decided to put on his best sleeveless T-shirt with the menacing face of a comic book character on it, give a thumbs up and take a picture of his agent finally making himself useful by cooking him dinner to reassure his legion of Berba-babes that everything will be just fine.

From Dimitar's official Facebook page:

Everything is going to be ok, stay calm, but me and my agent, we need to eat too:))..And don't read to many newspapers, they write whatever they want..:))..

Arsene Wenger explains the sale of Robin van Persie to Manchester United

So, Van Persie's gone Manchester City. Or United. Whatever. I honestly don't care. Yes, he scored 40 percent of Arsenal's goals last year, but the rest of the team scored 60 percent. A clear majority. Plus he always used way more towels than one person could possibly need.

I can't tell you how many times other players would come up to me and complain that there were no more towels and every single time Robin would have a giant pile. So have fun with that, Ferguson. You just paid 24 million to lose all your towels. Maybe you'll learn how to run a football club when you're 71.

It's a good thing Van Persie said he wanted to leave this summer because the second he showed up at that first preseason training session with more gray hair than me I was ready to sell him to a KFC. What is that? The guy's 29 years old. Maybe he has some kind of weird aging disorder. It would explain why he used to break his hip on a weekly basis and is now chasing trophies like they're ice cream vans.

Van Persie really is injury-prone, though. Like, even more than most Arsenal players. So you probably shouldn't get too excited about that partnership with Wayne Rooney. We've already seen what Man United do with Golden Boot winners (Dimitar Berbatov) and they don't play with Rooney. They sit on the bench. Also, when the papers have weekly stories about Chicharito and Danny Welbeck wanting more playing time, I'm going to laugh harder than I do at Garfield. And I f***ing love Garfield.

Anyway, the fact that my captains keep leaving is kind of messed up. Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Fabregas, Van Persie. William Gallas stayed long enough to be stripped of the captaincy but that's probably not a good thing. Maybe I should make Andrei Arshavin captain next and hope a Manchester club or Barcelona take the bait.

But, again, I don't care about those disloyal twits. I replaced Robin before he even left. Lukas Podolski. A French guy called Olivier. That's classier than being named after a little circus acrobat who hung out with Batman. Podolski scored 18 goals for his boyhood club before leaving for a second time when they got relegated. It'll be nice to finally have a player who walks the walk when it comes to loyalty.

In closing, I hopethe Mayans were right.

Arsenpocalypse 2012.

A Russian drug smuggler still imprisoned in Chile is playing professional football

In 2010, Russian footballer Maksim Molokoedov was arrested in Santiago, Chile, for attempting to smuggle six kilos of cocaine inside children's books. He was sentenced to three years and one day in prison and though he still has about a year to go on his sentence, he's been granted permission to play for Chilean second-division club Santiago Morning.

Under the watch of a prison guard, the 24-year-old Molokoedov plays with his teammates during the day and returns to his cell at night. Prior to his arrest, he played for Pskov-74 in the Russian second division. Though that was years ago and most people would assume that a prison term for drug smuggling would instantly end any chances at a career as a footballer, Molokoedov's skill and love for the game got him some special attention in the prison yard and prompted an unusual experiment in prisonerrehabilitation andre-assimilationinto society.

From the AP:

The miracle came at the rocky prison yard's pickup games. Inmates began offering him deodorant and a bar of soap to be treated to a few minutes of his dribbling skills and brutal right-footed shot.

Word got around about "El Ruso." It reached Chilean national coach Claudio Borghi, who said Molokoedov was good enough to go pro. It also reached Franklin Lobos, a former Chilean professional player who volunteers at prisons and who vouched for the Russian.

With almost a year still to go on his sentence, Molokoedov does not yet qualify for Sunday passes or the daily passes many inmates get after they complete most of their term. But starting in late July, the warden began letting him leave the prison grounds to play soccer as long he was accompanied by a guard.

Molokoedov scored twice in his first match against first-division club CD Palestino. On Tuesday, his transfer from Pskov-747 went through, allowing him to play in all competitions for his new club. Given this development, Molokoedov has turned down the chance to go back to Russia in order to stay in Chile as the country's only professional footballer and prisoner.

Molokoedov could have returned to Russia this month. An amnesty law recently took effect to free up overcrowded prisons by sending prisoners to their home countries on the condition they don't return to Chile for at least a decade.

Molokoedov regrets his attempt at drug smuggling and calls it "stupid," but other young footballers with stalling careers just might start going through Chilean airports with Dr. Seuss books stuffed with dope to get themselves in front of those talent-spotting prison scouts after this. A professional contract, praise from a national team manager and free room and board? You can't top that.

Arsene Wenger reviews Robin van Persie?s first match with Man United

I'm not a hard hearted man. When a player I cared for over many years leaves Arsenal, I don't immediate forget him. I don't shut off the part of me that cared for him and worried about him and nurtured his talent. I continue to follow his development and remain emotionally invested in his fortunes. So when I was flipping through the television looking for Celebrity Big Brother or a program about cooking apples and found Robin van Persie making his Manchester United debut in their loss to EvertonI was disappointed. I felt his pain deep in my soul and, I'm not afraid to admit, I wept for him.

OK, that's a lie. I laughed. I laughed and I laughed and I laughed. And when I thought I physically could not laugh anymore without choking on my joyous, gleeful laughter, Icougheduncontrollably while smiling a massive smile. Then I drank some orange juice and started laughing again mid-sip, which made me spit all over myself but I didn't care. I didn't care at all.

After sitting on the bench for 68 minutes like he was Michael Owen II: Cruise Control, the first thing Robin did was take a corner kick. First of all, who does that? Secondly, easy there, David Beckham. Third, I can't think of anymore snappy comments so I'll just say pffffffft. He accomplished exactly nothing with that and then, with Man United down a goal to Everton -- I repeat, Everton -- his new teammates proceeded to ignore him over the last 20 minutes more than Cesc Fabregas did my text messages when Real Madrid won La Liga last season. By the way, I still plan on self-publishing those texts under the title "Barca DNA? More Like Barca ROFLMAO :P". Alex Song will get the first copy. I will autograph it by drawing my middle finger.

I realize this was just one match, but it was all I needed to know that I did the right thing by dumping Van Persie on Man United for a tidy profit. Yes, he scored 40 percent of our goals last season, but what's 40 percent of Man United's none goals? He was with Arsenal through our trophy drought and then he goes to United and they lose their first match of the season to a club that makes me look like one of those fancy Russian Sheikhs who spends money and drinks bottled water. Coincidence? No. Plus he says he has a screaming little boy inside of him. That's just freaky and probably a sign of mental illness. Have fun babysitting, Ferguson.

Once I get Arsenal scoring goals, Robin's going to feel so much worse. And he won't get any of my cooked apples either. Checkmate Wenger!

DTotD: Fabio Coentrao climbs on top of Leo Messi

Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-2 in the first leg of the Supercopa de Espana. As expected, the match was filled with heavy challenges and delicate dives, but one of the most graceful and odd examples of Clasico physicality came early on when Leo Messi and Fabio Coentrao tangled.

The incident really sums up the whole dynamic at play in a Clasico -- Barcelona try to fly over Real Madrid, but Real counter by rolling over on top of Barca and sticking their face in their butts.

Anyway, the mustachioed observer was pleased...

Napoli boycotted Supercoppa Italiana ceremony after three sent off

Juventus beat Napoli 4-2 after extra time in the Supercoppa Italiana and the Azzurri were so upset about being reduced to nine men without their manager near the end of the first 90 minutes that they walked out on the post-match ceremony. Goran Pandev was sent off after arguing with officials in the 73rd minute, Juan Zuniga followed him back to the dressing room after a second yellow during injury time and manager Walter Mazzarri was sent off for arguing the first two decisions before extra time. Juventus went on to score twice more (including a Napoli own goal) before the final whistle.

After the match, Napoli were in no mood for parties. From Football Italia:

In extra time,Juventusemerged 4-2 winners, but Napoli went back into the locker room and refused to come back out for the presentation ceremony.

They did not receive their runner-up medals, so onlyJuventuslined up to receive the trophy. ThePartenopeialso announced they would not be talking to the media.

Last month, Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis threatened to pull his team from this match out of fear that traveling all the way to China would be a "crazy journey and pointless stress." Maybe this time Aurelio was actually right for once.

PAOK and Rapid Vienna fans have flare fight before Europa League match

Shortly before Thursday's Europa League match between PAOK and Rapid Vienna in Greece, the visiting Rapid fans came out of the stands and launched an attack on the home supporters that made the Toumbas Stadium resemble a warzone. The Rapid fans launched flares and fireworks into a stand filled with PAOK supporters like missiles and the PAOK fans who didn't flee the rain of fire retaliated with by launching flares and fireworks of their own back down at their aggressors.

The result was a violent, unscheduled pyrotechnics show that riot police struggled to contain. According tothe AP, the incident passed without any arrests or injuries and the match was somehow allowed to be played after a short delay. PAOK went on to win 2-1 with the decisive goal coming in the 83rd minute.

UPDATE: Rapid Vienna have released a statement detailing the assault their supporters faced outside the stadium. From Reuters:

"Some supporters of the host club welcomed the Rapid supporters (and officials and players) with almost unimaginable hatred," Rapid said in a statement.

Rapid added that their supporters were attacked in the city centre before the game but the real trouble started when 14 busloads of their fans arrived at the stadium.

"Bricks, pyrotechnic objects and benches were thrown and even two Molotov cocktails, which detonated a few metres from the bus and blew a crater in the asphalt," they said, adding that stones were also thrown and police used teargas.

It seems likely that both clubs will be subjected to punishments from UEFA.

Donovan: Mexico is a 'well-oiled machine'

MEXICO CITY -- Landon Donovan is a veteran of the soccer clashes with Mexico, one of the chief figures behind the United States' dominance in the rivalry from 2000 through early 2009 -- and one of the most hated U.S. players, at least on this side of the border. So he possesses a keen sense of what's what with the region's twin powers, and his take on El Tri's resurgence the past few years, behind a golden generation of young talent, is simple: Mexico is something else, indeed.

U.S. win in Mexico for the first time ever

It was just a friendly, both sides left out key players and the intimidating Estadio Azteca had a lot of empty seats, but the U.S. still beat Mexico 1-0 for a shocking and historic first ever win in Mexico. In 24 previous matches over the course of a bitter and often violent 75-year rivalry, the U.S.'s best result in Mexico was a 0-0 draw at the Azteca in 1997. Coming off of Mexico's gold medal performance at the Olympics (by an entirely different squad, mind you), this match was supposed to be an informal celebration for the home side, with the London heroes being trotted out at halftime to wave to the crowd. However, the combination of Tim Howard's stellar goalkeeping and Michael Orozco Fiscal's 80th-minute goal for the U.S. spoiled that a bit.

[Related: Tim Howard helps hold off Mexico]

Wednesday night's match was the first friendly played at the Azteca between the two sides -- an odd decision from the Mexican federation. Much of the match floated in a wading pool of apathy with the U.S. weak in attack and Mexico unable to capitalize on their chances. The U.S. relied on Howard and centerbacks Geoff Cameron and Maurice Edu to hold off Mexico both before and after substitutes Brek Shea, Terrance Boyd and Michael Orozco Fiscal combined to surprise the hosts with the match's only goal.

The result was enough to upset the home fans, too. ESPN's commentators had to give their post-match thoughts under the protection of umbrellas as the disgruntled fans above them dumped beer and every other liquid you can imagine down on them. According to Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl, the few U.S. fans brave enough to attend the match were evacuated before the final whistle.

Though this match in isolation might not mean a whole lot, it's a confidence booster for the U.S. and shows that they actually can overcome the mental blocks that build up over years of failure in Mexico.Combined with a 1-0 friendly win against Italy in Genoa earlier this year, manager Juergen Klinsmann seems to be instilling a new sense of self-confidence in the U.S. that's paying off. While it hasn't translated to consistently beautiful performances yet, it's a start.

UPDATE: Maurice Edu tweeted a picture of the post-match dressing room celebration...

You know it's a party when Jermaine Jones breaks out the oxygen tank.

Paul Scholes officially starts the season with signature bad tackle

The first weekend of Premier League matches for the 2012/13 season did not disappoint, but something was missing. So to make the start of the new season official, Paul Scholes put in one of his usual late, lunging tackles on Everton's Darron Gibson to earn a yellow card in the 13th minute of Manchester United's 1-0 loss.

Scholes helped former teammate Gibson up after the ugly challenge just to show that there were no hard feelings, just a shocking inability to learn how to tackle after nearly 20 years as one of the Premier League's best players.

According to Opta, that yellow was the 91st of Scholes' Premier League career (only Kevin Davies and Lee Bowyer have more). Whenever the 37-year-old does retire (for real), Man United should bring him back for the first match of each season and instead of a first kick, have him delight the crowd with a ceremonial two-footed tackle on an unsuspecting opponent.
