A Neymar golazo that might?ve just upped his transfer price

Brazilian football at its most Brazilian was on display when Ronaldinho's Flamengo beat Neymar's Santos 5-4 (it could've been 5-5 if Elano didn't have a weak penalty kick saved) on Wednesday night. Though Ronaldinho scored three goals to Neymar's two, it was the 19-year-old Real Madrid target who provided the most dazzling goal of the night to put Santos up 3-0 in the 25th minute.

Flamengo simply couldn't take the ball off of him as he dominated its attempt at defense, weaving through opponents, then passing it off to a teammate so he could sprint towards the box, get the ball right back, pass it around an opponent to himself, then just barely chip a shot over the keeper as he finally loses his balance with two more defenders converging on him. And all while his fauxhawk was uncharacteristically flat.

Not one to be shown up, Ronaldinho scored just two minutes later to begin Flamengo's comeback from three goals down to win the match. Still, this highlight just might squeeze a few more million out of Florentino Perez's pocket.

Solo, Wambach try to kick ball into moving cab on Letterman show

(Skip ahead to 2:48 into the video for the taxi shootout.)

As part of the New York media whirlwind tour bythe returning U.S. women's team, striker Abby Wambach and goalkeeper Hope Solo went on "The Late Show with David Letterman" for an interview and a delightful new game. Outside the Ed Sullivan Theater, the two footballers joined Dave to see who could kick a ball into the open door of moving New York City taxicabs.

After telling Dave that, as a keeper, she "doesn't ever shoot," and having Dave respond by asking, "Do you have any kind of a shot?" Solo reacted strongly, saying "Yes, I have a shot!" And she was intent on proving it. The players and the late-night host then took their shots at the same time as each cab drove by.

On the fourth go of blasting balls off the side off a cab, it was the keeper (and not the striker) who hit the target and actually got one inside. Of course, Wambach probably would have hit it on the first try if she was heading the ball instead of kicking it.

"Beat that, Landon Donovan!" Solo said as Dave threw to a commercial break.

Landon, you have officially been challenged to a game of ... whatever you call this game.

Atletico fans say goodbye to Aguero by wishing death upon him

The same day Kun Aguero officially became a Manchester City player, his old club, Atletico Madrid hosted a Europa League qualifier against Stromgodset. So, the fans Aguero left because he prefers colder weather took the opportunity to hang a farewell banner at the Vicente Calderon that read "die Kun traitor." How sweet.

Even without the player it swapped for 35 million, Atletico still won 2-1, and over in Manchester, Sergio had a big smile on his face and a new shirt on his back.

DT Exclusive: Carlos Tevez sells Kun Aguero on Man City

Though Man City have yet to sell Carlos Tevez, they have already "replaced" him with fellow Argentine Kun Aguero. The following is a transcript of the conversation between the two that convinced Aguero to sign with the FA Cup winners.

Aguero: So I'm thinking of joining Manchester City, Carlitos. I never read football news, so I'm assuming you absolutely love it there. What can you tell me?

Tevez: You have no idea what you're in for...

Aguero: Ooo that sounds exciting! Specifically, though. What can I look forward to?

Tevez: Seriously, you have no idea. The weather is awful.

Aguero: Yeah? I like bad weather. Sunshine every day is boring haha.

Tevez: I'm not kidding. The houses are expensive, too. They cost six or seven million pounds!

Aguero: Wow! That must be the most beautiful city in the world with so many lavish homes. It's a good thing we're footballers and can afford to live in places that nice!

Tevez: No, you're not getting it. This place has nothing. Nothing.

Aguero: That's great -- I don't like things. I don't like them at all. I mean, what's with spatulas? Why do they exist? We don't need them.

Tevez: Listen to me! I would never come here on holiday! I have no new friends! It's another world!

Aguero: Another world? Yes! I always wanted to be an astronaut! Do I get to fly in a rocket ship to get there? Maybe together we can make friends with the aliens!

Tevez: Whatever. Do what you want. I'm leaving. I can't take it anymore.

Aguero: Leaving? Why? Do they not pay the massive wages they promise on time?

Tevez: No, they do.

Aguero: Then you have no reason to leave. This place sounds perfect!

[Tevez shrugs]

Messi: Hahahahaha I just built the world's smallest Lego violin for Carlitos.

Dimitar Berbatov is?The Continental

Well hello there.

I see you've caught me wearing sunglasses while reading erotic nonfiction as I jet around the United States on Manchester United's Berba-bang tour. Will you be my personal air hostess for this flight? ... Well, if you change your mind, I could use a new water bottle filled of chloroform. Ha-HA! I'm joking with you. The Berba doesn't need erotic enhancers like that. Simply reading a magazine while wearing sunglasses inside a plane is always enough to get the Berba-babes like yourself in the mood for sensual oddities...

No, I can't see what I'm reading. But that's not important, because I usually just make up the words to whatever I'm reading anyway. For example, it says right here that Sir Alex Ferguson once fainted after thinking about incomparable and highly benchable goal scoring talents. It also says that you will join me in the plane's bathroom so we can tell secrets and tickle each other's toenails. ... Please stop accusing me of being illiterate. I've actually been diagnosed as "selectively literate." And incurably titilating. Ha-HA!

Oh-OHHH! We hit a patch of turbulence and now my water bottle filled with chloroform has spilled all over me! Oh, this is terrible! I know I said there wasn't actually chloroform in the water bottle, but I just wanted to surprise you when I used it on myself so you could do all the sexy things you dream of doing to me while I'm unconscious! Now the presentation of my surprise has been ruined and I am quickly losing consciousness. Quick! Find a jar of mayonnaise and get to work. Just don't remove my sunglasses and be sure to tell me everything you did once I wake up.

Join us again next time for another chapter in the life of...The Continental...

Bob Bradley finally gets sacked: A list of potential replacements

Following an embarrassing loss to Mexico in the Gold Cup final and five frustrating years with just enough to success to keep his job as long as he did, Bob Bradley has officially been sacked as coach of the U.S. national team. And in case your teary eyes are deceiving you, here's the announcement from the USSF's official website:

"We want to thank Bob Bradley for his service and dedication to U.S. Soccer during the past five years," said Gulati. "During his time as the head coach of our Men's National Team he led the team to a number of accomplishments, but we felt now was the right time for us to make a change. It is always hard to make these decisions, especially when it involves someone we respect as much as Bob. We wish him the best in his future endeavors."

This announcement comes after a meeting at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., between Gulati, Bradley and U.S. Soccer CEO Dan Flynn. [...]

U.S. Soccer will have a further announcement on Friday.

So with Bradley, his wolf stare and his collection of sweatpants likely heading back to MLS, that leaves the question of who take his job with the U.S. team. Here's the shortlist of candidates Carter and I swiped from Sunil Gulati's office, along with our comments on each one...

Jurgen Klinsmann -- The former German national team coach, who has been meeting with U.S. officials off and on for years now and scaring them with his ideas of a total systematic overhaul. Will this be his chance to put his grandiose ideas into practice or will he stick to consulting Toronto FC into the ground?

Any MLS coach -- Jason Kreis, Sigi Schmid, Steve Nicol, Dominic Kinnear, Bruce Arena for the comeback? They are all successful MLS coaches. Just like Bob was.

Marcello Lippi -- He won a World Cup for Italy. And, more recently, he was a part of the abomination that was Italy in the 2010 World Cup.

Carlo Ancelotti -- Seriously, I want this. The magic eyebrow would dominate CONCACAF with its press conference gymnastics alone.

Michael Bradley -- Just to make it extra awkward at the Bradleys' holiday dinner table this year, why not Michael as player/coach?

Freddy Adu -- Staying with the player/coach theme, now that The Adu is back, just put him in charge of everything. He has a good 45 years of experience in the game at this point.

Abby Wambach -- Maybe it's time someone from the more successful women's side shows the U.S. men how it's done. She's already been named player/coach for her WPS team. Natural progression.

Chicharito -- Just to make some heads explodes. Also because he can score more from the touchline than most USMNT players can from inside the box.

Rafa Benitez -- He's been unemployed for a while now, so someone has to take pity on him. Plus, not having to go against Alex Ferguson will make him 87 percent more sane. FACT.

Timber Joey -- Hey, he has a chainsaw.

Maradona -- You know you want it.

Cristiano Ronaldo toys with Galaxy defenders, scores

With the L.A. Galaxy in midseason form and Real Madrid just starting their preseason in the U.S., Cristiano Ronaldo once again demonstrated his ability to amaze in a friendly on Saturday night. Real already up 2-0 after the first half, Ronaldo toyed with poor Bryan Jordan by unleashing a combination of fakes and stepovers inside the box before squirting the ball inside the near post from a ridiculous angle to make it 3-0.

Real went on to win 4-1, and though the result was meaningless, this goal will probably make MLS defenders happy that they don't have to suffer at the feet of Ronaldo during the regular season.

DTotD: Latest Egypt v Algeria brawl starts with kick in the back

The violent hatred between Egypt and Algeria apparently hasn't simmered down since their vicious 2010 World Cup qualifiers against each other. Right after Algeria beat Egypt 1-0 to win their sixth gold medal at the Military Games in Brazil, Egypt's Ahmed Eid, who is notorious for his bad temper, decided to interrupt his complaints to the officials by running over to a nearby Algerian player and kung fu kicking him square in the back.

Others got involved after that and a shirtless Algerian player turned into Jean Claude Van Damme, kicking everyone in sight (worst at 23 seconds into the video).

Maybe it would be best if these two teams didn't play each other again for a while.

This is Oguchi Onyewu towering over his tiny new teammate

American defender Oguchi Onyewu made his debut for Sporting CP recently, entering the match at the same time as 21-year-old midfielder Andre Martins. At 6-foot-5, Onyewu is a full foot taller than Martins, which makes this look like a before and after shot of a young Bruce Banner hulking up to play football.

It's unclear whether Sporting put them in at the same time in order to have them join together (i.e. have Martins sit on Onyewu's shoulders) to form a SuperFootballer (sponsored by Super Bock!). I'm guessing that's the ultimate goal.

Thanks to Andre (not Andre Martins) for the picture!

U.S. miss first three PKs in shootout, Japan win first WWC

Despite Nike's "Pressure Makes Us" ad campaign for the United States Women's World Cup run, the team missed their first three penalty kicks in the final's deciding shootout after Japan came back twice from being a goal down late in the match. Japan beat the U.S. for the first time ever (26 matches) and earned their first ever WWC title, showing just as much determination, fight and toughness as the U.S. was lauded for throughout the tournament.

By beating No. 2-ranked Germany, No.5-ranked Sweden and the No. 1-ranked U.S. in that order during the knockout rounds, Japan proved that if pressure made anyone, it was them. The first equalizer in the 80th minute was a gift from the American defenders, but after Abby Wambach put the U.S. ahead 2-1 in extra time with yet another crucial header, the tournament's leading scorer, Homare Sawa, scored a wonderful goal off a corner in the 116th minute to push the game to penalties.

Though it seemed the U.S might have a chance to recreate the iconic scenes of their successful shootout in 1999, the team's first three shots just were not good enough. Japan keeper Ayumi Kaihori came up with a kick save on Shannon Boxx's opening shot, then Carli Lloyd blasted her shot over the crossbar and Kaihori again saved Tobin Heath's attempt after that, putting the U.S. in a hole they would not escape. Japan won the shootout 3-1, bringing much needed smiles to the faces of their countrymen back home.

Here's video of the shootout...

U.S. star goalkeeper Hope Solo went over to her family in tears after letting in 20-year-old defender Saki Kumagai's winning shot.

And after an absolutely incredible match, it was Japan lifting the trophy.

Alex Morgan's Facebook proposals prove...something

Ahh, naive media pundits. The folks atSports Illustrated recently linked totelevision ratings to trumpet the success of the Women's World Cup. Deadspin and KCKRS did slightly better, glancing at the Googletraffic stats for "Hope Solo boyfriend" to evidence a recent spike in interest. Yet with seriousfinancial issues facing the domestic female league in the US, can such barometers of passing fancy be mistaken for an anchor?

No. Of course not.

There can only be one true and conclusive piece of evidence that Women's soccer has forever entered the American sporting consciousness: the number ofFacebook marriage proposals to USWNT substitute striker Alex Morgan in the last 72 hours.

Marriage is permanence, commitment, passion, endurance. Marriage is 'til death do us part. Only this enduring and symbolically important societal norm can forecast the future of female soccer. Now I know your first concern with this statistical analysis: would Morgan'sglorious chipped goal to seal the win over France cause a rush of blood to young men's heads? Probably. Hence, we only counted marriage proposals starting last Thursday, the day following the game. Passions dimmed, and cooler heads prevailed. We assume.

Of course, in terms of statistical counting, a marriage proposal must involve a clear and explicit offer. We did not include any general "wish you were with me" facebook posts. We did include a Spanish-language offer, but were unable to translate the German posts. Thus, if anything, our final number of 27 may be lower than it should be. Due to logistical constraints, we only focused on a single Alex Morgan Facebook page. And sorry gents, I know the word "single" and "Alex Morgan" made your heart skip a beat. In fact she is attached. Making these 27 proposals all the more audacious.

And here they are, in all their glory...

Thus, as you can see, women's soccer has finally arrived in America. CASE CLOSED. Susan B. Anthony's ghost can stop stalking the Earth and ascend to Heaven. Feminists, time to find a hobby to fill all this new world-of-perfect-equality free time. These 27 fine young chaps show that the male sporting audience is without a doubt committed. And we can all look forward to a reality TV show involving this goalscoring striker if she ever reverts to bachelorette status.

Obama tweets apology to USWNT, quotes Abby Wambach

Earlier in the week, members of the U.S. women's national team expressed their desire to have President Obama attend their World Cup final against Japan. But since he has the small matter of the country's budget crisis to solve, he couldn't make it over to Germany for the game and sent Jill Biden and Chelsea Clinton instead.

On match day, Obama tweeted an apology and well wishes to the team, then gave Abby Wambach's brand new Twitter account a shoutout, along with a quote from the U.S. striker. Though it would have been nice to have the president at their match live and in person, having him quote their leader isn't half bad.

Update: Here's the official White House photo of the Obama family watching the final, as tweeted by Barack...

Looks like a match snack of chips and salsa. And a few troubled expressions over the U.S. hitting the post so many times.

Scandal seemed to help Giggs sell more replica shirt

It seems that trying (and failing) to prevent tabloids from reporting your affairs with topless models and your own sister-in-law has a more positive influence on shirt sales than forgetting how to score goals. As (indirect) evidence of this, the annual list of the top 10 Premier League replica shirt names has been released and Ryan Giggs is on it for the first time in the four seasons the list has been published, while Fernando Torres has dropped from the top spot for the first time since 2007/08.

Here's the full top 10 for 2010/11 (via Sporting Intelligence):

1. Wayne Rooney (up 2 spots from previous season)
2. Fernando Torres (-1)
3. Steven Gerard (-1)
4. Chicharito (new entry)
5. Robin van Persie (re-entry, No. 7 in 2007/08)
6. Frank Lampard (unchanged)
7. Didier Drogba (unchanged)
8. Luis Suarez (new entry)
9. Andrei Arshavin (-4)
10. Ryan Giggs (new entry)

Rooney actually gets a sales boost from inciting the wrath of Man United fans by demanding a transfer away from the club, then changing his mind. Chicharito makes a big impact in his fantastic first season and will probably challenge Rooney before long. Torres slips, but still proves capable of recouping that 50 million transfer fee (and then some) for Chelsea regardless of his goal total. Van Persie makes a comeback as Cesc Fabregas drops out of the top 10 for the first time, perhaps because Arsenal fans are anticipating his departure. Arshavins slides because not enough realize the brilliance of his Q&As and, at 37 years old, Ryan Giggs slips into the top 10 despite all his trouble off the pitch.

No publicity is bad publicity.

The Copa America final went according to (Uruguay?s) plan

Paraguay managed to take advantage of a sub-standard Copa America by reaching the final without winning a single match before a penalty shootout and scoring in just two of five games. And then they met Uruguay.

The Battle of the Guays was not the epic fight to the death for Guay supremacy we hoped it would be. Instead, Luis Suarez scored in the 11th minute, then Diego Forlan scored in the 41st and one last time in the 89th for a 3-0 win and Uruguay's record 15th Copa America title (putting them ahead of Argentina's 14 and Brazil's eight). And that was that.

Following their fourth place finish at the World Cup last summer, this was a nice reward for Uruguay's fine play. Meanwhile, Paraguay's attention-grabbing and sponsor-supported superfan, Larissa Riquelme, was forced to keep her clothes on for at least a few hours.

UPDATE: Uruguay's Martin Caceres did not keep his clothes on.

Kalou (a.k.a. ?David Cameroon?) takes you flying with Chelsea

Salomon Kalou commandeered a Chelsea TV camera and filmed his teammates on their flight from Malaysia to Bangkok. The best part of the whole things is right at the start when Kalou tells Fernando Torres that his name is "David Cameroon" (instead of David Cameron) and the unbridled laughter that provokes off camera (from Obi Mikel?).

Other highlights include Didier Drogba making fun of Mr. David Cameroon, John Terry and Frank Lampard sleeping next to each other and the hodgepodge ending to it all.

This needs to be a new series. The Airplane Adventures of David Cameroon. Get on it Chelsea TV.

Man United?s bus stopped just to let fans get on board

This is pretty awesome. Determined to win the undying affections of as many fans as possible on its U.S. tour, Manchester United did something special for a Bulgarian family that flagged down its bus after a training session in Seattle.

With the whole team and backroom staff on board, the bus not only stopped for the small group of fans, but let them on board to get as many autographs and handshakes as they wanted. Basically, for these people it was like if Willy Wonka had a chocolate factory on wheels and they were invited inside to do as they pleased.

With all the players sitting there, just waiting to sign something (or, in the twins' case, playing video games in the back), the fans slowly made their way down the aisle. Once they successfully avoided the no-name players and got all the ones they wanted, they wished the team luck, said a few words to Sir Alex up front and got off the bus, where a Man Utd rep handed out more treats.

And then, they all woke up.

Werder Bremen players race ponies, one goes rogue

Since there is no better preseason preparation for football than racing ponies, Werder Bremen players Marko Marin, Tim Wiese, Markus Rosenberg and Clemens Fritz did just that last weekend. The 600-meter race took place on a grass track and, simply put, it was hilarious.

One pony decided to go rogue and run around in a big circle, and another pony was so fat that I'm pretty sure its pre-race diet consisted solely of Big Macs and ice cream. In the end, goalkeeper Tim Wiese, riding his pony like a Roman emperor in a chariot race (if they chariots were attached to ponies), won by a comfortable margin.

LOCALS: Waves make waves in women's game

It's not Women's Professional Soccer, but it is pro women's soccer, and that's a start -- for the Orange County Waves and a good number of their players. Where it leads is paramount: No less than the future of the women's game in America is at stake.

That's the starting point for the Waves, the most direct descendent of the great but short-lived L.A. Sol and a club that aspires to provide a foundation for the Westward expansion of WPS -- in whatever form that might take -- as the third-year league plots for the uncertainty ahead.

How that will play out is a mystery, but the Waves plan to be involved, and they've spent the last few months building a worthy rsum in the Women's Premier Soccer League, one of two national semipro/amateur women's leagues playing in the WPS's shadow.

Led by former Sol head coach Abner Rogers, the Waves have made it a point to proceed as professionals in every way -- and yes, everyone except a quintet with college eligibility is paid. It's made an impact on the field.

The Waves (11-1-2) won the WPSL's Pacific-South Division and this weekend is in the Bay Area, at Dublin High School, for the Pacific Conference finals. They take on Marin County's North Bay FC Wave (9-1-4) in a semifinal Saturday -- San Diego SeaLions (11-2-1) and Bay Area Breeze (9-2-3) play in the other semi -- and Sunday's winner heads to next week's WPSL final four in Lisle, Ill.

Rogers bids for the championship with a squad featuring five players with WPS experience (Mission Viejo's Kiki Bosio, Kristina Larsen and Jenny Anderson-Hammond, Arcadia's Brittany Klein and Czech-born midfielder Vendula Strnadova) and another selected in this year's WPS draft (Buena Park's Tanya Taylor, from UC Irvine). Larsen is sidelined because of a broken collar bone after scoring four goals in her first five games.

NOT WPS: The performances have been good, but let's be clear. The range of competition in the WPSL varies greatly, and only the Breeze and SeaLions have given the Waves much of a game. The playoffs will be much tougher: The Chicago Red Stars, one of four clubs shed through WPS's first two seasons, has already qualified for (and will play host to) the league's final weekend. The New York Fury, a virtual WPS side affiliated with the Philadelphia Independence, failed to get through the Eastern Conference bracket.

“The level of play is definitely lower than WPS,” said Klein, a central midfielder who played for the Red Stars in 2009 and the Washington Freedom last season but chose not to pursue a WPS roster spot this year. “We still have some girls that are WPS level. So although our competition for the most part is definitely notches down, we try to still maintain a high level.”

Says Rogers: “Oh, it's a drop. It's definitely a drop” from WPS to WPSL. “You don't have five or six foreign players. Those players make a big difference. They raise the level of competition in every training session. Everyone knows Marta, but to have [former Sol stars] Aya [Miyama] and Camille [Abily] ... that's what makes the difference.”
