Liverpool hosted Stoke in the first match of the Premier League season and after a couple of early hiccups, new Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet had about as dreamy of a debut as he could hope for. Daniel Sturridge gave the home side a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute, but it was under threat when a Daniel Agger handball in the box gave Stoke an 88th minute spot kick.
Against better judgement, Jonathan Walters stepped up to take the penalty, and if the former Sunderland keeper saw the graphic that viewers at home could (image above), it was pretty clear where he should dive. The result?
After making the initial save, Mignolet then hopped back to his feet and saved the rebound with his hip. Here's the video:
Thanks to Mignolet's heroics, Liverpool held on for the 1-0 win that put them atop the table (if only for a bit) for the first time since 2009. Not a bad way to say hello. As for Walters...it might be time to pick a new spot to aim for.
