Antoine Griezmann with brilliant scissor kick against boyhood club in Champions league playoff
Though he's only 22, Real Sociedad winger Antoine Griezmann has already scored a number of wonderful goals in his career, but none as special on a personal level as the one he scored against Lyon on Tuesday. With Real Sociedad visiting the club he supported as a boy for the first leg of their Champions League playoff, Griezmann was determined to make the most of the occasion. And he did that with a spectacular scissor kick to put Sociedad up 1-0 in the 17th minute.
Before the match, he explained what the experience meant to him. From UEFA.com:
"For me, Lyon has been my club since I was a kid," he said. "I used to come to see all the Champions League matches here with my father. Seen from Spain, Lyon are a club that counts, a historic club.
"The moment I stepped on the Stade de Gerland pitch, I felt a lot of emotions," Griezmann added. "I even pointed out the spots in the stands where I used to sit. I can't wait until I put my boots on tomorrow. But there's no feeling of revenge: I just want to play. This will be my first competitive match in France with Real Sociedad - and to top it off, it'll be a Champions League match."
But while Griezmann was feeling all warm and fuzzy, teammate Haris Seferovic did his best to try and show him up in the 50th minute with Sociedad's second goal...
Neymar reacts to Barcelona?s domination of Levante from the bench
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa...whoa. Whoa. What just happened here? Did Harry Potter abduct me in the night and take me back to 2009? I just sat on the bench and watched Barcelona score six goals IN THE FIRST HALF against Levante. Without me. "End of an era" Barcelona. Barcelona that lost in the Champions League semifinals 7-0 on aggregate to Bayern Munich. Barcelona that now has a new manager from Argentina called Tutu or something. I don't even know his name yet because it's the first day of the season and the score is 6-0 after 45 MINUTES while I'm sitting here like the sixth member of One Direction.
I was supposed to save this club. Yeah, they won the league last year 15 points clear of Real Madrid, but everyone was still all like, "Yep, Barcelona's done now. They're over. Better stick bendy straws in our ears and finish the home lobotomy we have to be doing to think something as completely stupid as that." Still, I was going to be the guy who keeps Messi at the top. I was going to come in and be that guy. And then I was going to surpass him in every way imaginable. But that was going to be later, after he loves me and develops an insatiable lust for exotic hams and doesn't care anymore.
Anyway, this is just ridiculous. They didn't beat anyone 7-0 last season. No one. They played Levante twice last season and only won 5-0 in those two matches combined. I know that because I just checked since I'm sitting on the bench, drawing on my finger with a pen and watching them score six goals against Levante in one half. And now it's halftime and I'm still here by myself because I have no idea what to do with my life anymore.
Seriously, what do I do now? Should I learn to knit? Would that be useful? I beat Spain and won the Golden Ball at the Confederations Cup. Should I just start knitting stuff for people while they all score goals and be perfect all season? Should I fold towels? Become a brilliant sandwich artist at Subway? They'd probably make me wear a hairnet there and that would be the worst day of my life everyday forever. Oh wait, someone's actually talking to me. I'm going to need a second to remember what it's like to actually exist.
"Hey Neymar, come on into the match now." Thanks, guys. It's 6-0 an hour into the game. If I score a goal or three now I'm just going to feel like a bully who takes ice cream from people who can only eat dairy products. Fantastic. Happy birthday to me even though my birthday is really in February. Great.
And that's a yellow card. That's my contribution on the day. A yellow card in the 88th minute when it's 7-0. Call me when the team really needs me because we're only up like 5-0 and Alexis Sanchez can't find his other shoe. In the meantime, I'll be volunteering for Messi's foundation to do something actually useful. And no one's even listening. Perfect.

Hellas Verona fans give Mario Balotelli ironic cheers during Milan upset
Even before Milan opened the new Serie A season against newly promoted Hellas Verona, Mario Balotelli was already being targeted. Amidst fears and predictions that Balotelli would be subject to more racial abuse from opposing fans, Mayor of Verona and member of the far-right Lega Nord party Flavio Tosi engaged in a bit of victim blaming.
"If Balotelli provoked people a bit less, then it would be even better," Tosi said. "There are many black players, but not all of them stoke the fire of the opposition fans. Most have no problems. Balotelli is very good at making himself unlikeable.?
Tosi's comments drew even more attention and expectations of trouble to the match. But in an effort to "disappoint" critics who anticipated nastiness, Verona fans made a purposeful decision to go the opposite way and sarcastically cheer Balotelli. They chanted "Mario, Mario" when he first came out before the match, which he laughed off. They then proceeded to cheer him every time he touched the ball. And so it seems ironic support is the new racism.
As for the match itself, a brace from 36-year-old new signing Luca Toni proved to be the difference for Verona, who won 2-1. Toni dedicated his goals to his daughter Bianca, born in June ? a year after his son was stillborn.
Despite a number of good chances and near misses, Balotelli did not score and his frustration on the day resulted in a yellow card for arguing the referee's decision to not award him a penalty in the 90th minute. After the match, Balotelli tweeted, "Compliments to Verona (the players). I take blame for our defeat. Anyway compliments to Verona again."
Complimenti al Verona ( calciatori) mi colpevolizzo della nostra sconfitta. Comunque complimenti Verona ancora.
? Mario Balotelli (@FinallyMario) August 24, 2013
It wasn't all fake niceties from Verona supporters, though. Immediately after the final whistle, there were clashes with the embittered Milan fans, with the two sides throwing seats and other objects at each other.
And to think the season has only just begun.

Rangers player accused of betting against his own team by Scottish FA
Rangers midfielder Ian Black has been accused by the Scottish FA of betting against his own team three times between March 2006 and July 2013. Black, who previously played for Inverness and Hearts before joining Rangers after the club's liquidation and reformation in 2012, has also been accused of betting on his own team 10 other times and matches in which he had no connection 147 times.
From STV:
The player will be asked to attend a hearing at Hampden on Thursday, September 12. He has until Monday, August 26 to provide evidence to the governing body.
Footballers registered in Scotland are prohibited by the Scottish FA from betting on any football match.
If found guilty, players can be fined from 500 to 1,000,000 and can be either suspended or expelled from playing professional football.
Though betting against your own team is always a clear no-no, this is another reminder of the murky relationship football has with the gambling industry. The Scottish FA itself allows bookmaker William Hill to be the title sponsor of the Scottish Cup, saving the competition from a whole year without that sweet, sweet sponsorship money and sending a mixed message on the relationship between football and bookmakers.

Barcelona?s Carles Puyol heads a flower pot in brilliant new Qatar Airways commercial
This week, Barcelona announced a ?100m extension to their lucrative shirt sponsorship deal with Qatar Airways, which will see the Arabic flag carrier advertised outside the Nou Camp, on the seats and within the club museum.
To coincide with the announcement, the airline released a new commercial that features a plane landing in "The Land of FC Barcelona." Once there, Gerard Pique plays a grumpy customs officer, Neymar needlessly kicks someone else's luggage instead of picking it up, Andres Iniesta paints a wall with a ball, Gary Lineker drives a cab and Leo Messi leads a dance class exclusively for attractive young people.
The highlight of the clip, however, is when Carles Puyol heads a falling flower pot and smashes it into a thousand pieces, saving a couple of ladies and a dog from serious injury (but presumably showering them in dirt and pieces of terracotta).
Most players would insist on CGI for a scene like that, but we can only assume Puyol did it for real. It's the reason he's banned from most garden centers in Catalunya.
Ronaldinho gets his teeth fixed, celebrates with lovely backheel pass
Ronaldinho's infectious smile has always been one of his many endearing traits, but it's also been the subject of many hurtful jokes and caricatures over the years. The alignment of his teeth was just about as creative as what he can do with the ball. No matter what was said or how he was depicted, it never seemed to bother Ronaldinho, though. He just kept smiling and winning and inspiring with his unique skills.
And yet at the age of 33, he somewhat surprisingly decided to do something about his gnarled chompers. According to Globo, Ronaldinho's agent/brother confirmed that the Copa Libertadores winner underwent minor surgery on his gums and got porcelain veneers ahead of Atletico-MG's match against Bahia on Wednesday.
With his whiter, straiter smile, Ronaldinho showed that his talents are just that much more dazzling in his side's 2-0 win over Bahia. Here he is with a backheel pass...
Even after two hair transplants, Wayne Rooney still can't do that.

DT Exclusive: David Moyes negotiates with David Moyes for Fellaini and Baines
Just three months since David Moyes left Everton, his club for 11 years, to become Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement at Manchester United, he's attempted to do some transfer business with his old club. And it wasn't very well received. According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton called Man United's 28 million joint bid for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini "derisory and insulting." The following is a transcript of 2013 Man United manager David Moyes negotiating with 2012 Everton manager David Moyes for the two players.
Man Utd Moyes: Hello, this is David Moyes, manager of Manchester United.
Everton Moyes: Hello, David! This is David Moyes, manager of Everton. How are you?
Man Utd Moyes: Quite well, actually. Won the Community Shield and beat Swansea 4-1. How are things at Accrington?
Everton Moyes: Everton, David.
Man Utd Moyes: Right, Everton. Everton. Well, I'll get to the point since I have a dinner with Justin Timberlake in half an hour. He lets me call him JT because we're friends now. He's a big Man United supporter, you know. Anyway, if you could get Accrington to sell us Baines and Fellaini for 28 million, that would be lovely.
Everton Moyes: I assume you mean 28 million for each of them and 56 million total?
Man Utd Moyes: No no, 28 total. It's a joint bid. All the big managers make joint bids to save time so we can do important things like laugh at the less fortunate and throw coins at Arsene Wenger so we can watch him scramble to pick them up.
Everton Moyes: Oh, is that how it is? You're just like all the others. Thinking you can push around the little guys to get whatever you want, whenever you want without fair compensation. You're just a Big Time Charlie.
Man Utd Moyes: You shut your trophyless ginger mouth! Now are you going to make sure I get Baines and Fellaini for 28 million or not?
Everton Moyes: No, I'm not!
Man Utd Moyes: I drive a Chevy Sonic from Manchester United's official global automotive sponsor!
Everton Moyes: I'm sorry to hear that, David.
Man Utd Moyes: Look, I'm sorry, David. This job is very stressful. There's a lot of pressure and I keep waking up in the middle of night and seeing Ferguson's face an inch from my nose, telling me that I better keep winning.
Everton Moyes: Nightmares?
Man Utd Moyes: No, he's literally there in the room with me. I don't know how he keeps getting in. Anyway, a bit of advice, David... Don't ever tell everyone that you're going after Cesc Fabregas. Just don't.
Everton Moyes: Who would be stupid enough to do that after all his "Barca DNA" nonsense?
Man Utd Moyes: I will beat you with a diesel engine from Manchester United's official diesel engine partner Yanmar!
Everton Moyes: That can't be a real sponsor, David.
Man Utd Moyes: It is a very real sponsor, David. I've had to memorize them all. It took three weeks.
Everton Moyes: I'm beginning to think you and I don't have very much in common, David. Tell me, how do you feel about Wayne Rooney?
Man Utd Moyes: He's a ballbag.
Everton Moyes: Well, we're in agreement there.

Soon to be Stoke striker Juan Agudelo scores with audacious backheel lob
Even with a late penalty chance, Stoke couldn't manage a goal in their Premier League opener against Liverpool, losing 1-0. But a few hours later, 20-year-old Juan Agudelo showed that help is on the way when he casually lobbed a rather stunning back/side heel flick just over the goal line to put New England up 1-0 on Chicago in the 54th minute. They eventually won 2-0.
Agudelo is set to join Stoke in January, having signed a pre-contract last week. He already has 17 caps and two goals for the U.S., but has fallen out of the international picture in the last couple of years while fending off an unfair amount of hype for his tender age and bouncing around MLS. Goals like this have a tendency to make people take notice, though.

Arsenal fan cries over club?s lack of spending after loss to Aston Villa
(Warning: Videos contain lots of NSFW language.)
Saturday's 3-1 loss to Aston Villa at the Emirates to start the Premier League season proved to be the tipping point for many Arsenal fans frustrated by years of not winning trophies or spending the money necessary to do so. One such fan is Hugh Wizzy, who is not Marouane Fellaini but does a YouTube series called "ArseBang." Yes, "ArseBang." And shortly after the loss to Villa, while the emotions were at their most raw, he used the latest edition of his show to deliver an impassioned rant directed at Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal board that included some very real tears. It's only the first match of the season and Arsene Wenger is officially making people cry now.
About four minutes into the video, which includes a number of interviews with other Arsenal fans in New York City, the subject matter becomes too overwhelming. "There are dads out there who have got three jobs, three kids and they work their [expletives] off to get a season ticket to take the boy to the football," he says, wiping away tears. "It's holding us back and it's hurting everyone. Even the people that backed you from the beginning!" The mix of anger and weeping escalates from there.
And if that doesn't appeal to whatever sense of compassion remains in Wenger's frugal, frugal heart, then the video below could intimidate him into action.
Filmed outside the Emirates right after the match, the interview with an older gentleman who is too busy angrily pointing to cry, also features a message aimed at Wenger and the board. That message is, "Spend some money right now or I will poke you to death." And it comes through loud and clear.
There are two weeks left in the summer transfer window. If the deadline passes without Arsenal buying a single player who costs more than "free," than Wenger and the board will have to build a panic room out of all the cash they didn't spend.
Simon Mignolet makes late penalty double save to preserve win in Liverpool debut
Liverpool hosted Stoke in the first match of the Premier League season and after a couple of early hiccups, new Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet had about as dreamy of a debut as he could hope for. Daniel Sturridge gave the home side a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute, but it was under threat when a Daniel Agger handball in the box gave Stoke an 88th minute spot kick.
Against better judgement, Jonathan Walters stepped up to take the penalty, and if the former Sunderland keeper saw the graphic that viewers at home could (image above), it was pretty clear where he should dive. The result?
After making the initial save, Mignolet then hopped back to his feet and saved the rebound with his hip. Here's the video:
Thanks to Mignolet's heroics, Liverpool held on for the 1-0 win that put them atop the table (if only for a bit) for the first time since 2009. Not a bad way to say hello. As for Walters...it might be time to pick a new spot to aim for.

Millwall forced to start match in Sheffield Wednesday?s old kit after failing to bring their own
When Millwall arrived for their match against Sheffield Wednesday, their sole focus had to be on getting a result. Sitting at the very bottom of the Championship with three losses in as many matches, making them the only club in the league with no points on the new season, Wednesday presented an opportunity. After all, they weren't doing much better with a draw and two losses. But amidst that focus on the match itself, Millwall ended up forgetting something simple but rather important: their kit.
According to Millwall's Twitter account, the wrong bins were sent from London to Sheffield, leaving them without appropriate attire for the match. Their hosts were able to help out by lending them their yellow away kit from last season to wear until Millwall's own strip could be delivered (hopefully) in time for the second half.
So the match went ahead with Sheffield Wednesday in their home kit and Millwall in Sheffield Wednesday's old kit. And perhaps as a result of the confusion, Wednesday defender Kamil Zayatte scored an own goal to give Millwall a 1-0 lead in just the fifth minute. Wednesday went on to score twice the proper way to take a 2-1 lead into halftime, when Millwall were able to change into their orange third kit and play out the rest of the match looking like themselves. And in the 87th minute, Millwall equalized from the penalty spot to earn a 2-2 draw and their first point of the campaign.
Last season, Barnsley had to wear Crystal Palace's away kit after being told that their own was too similar to the home side's. Apparently kit sharing is becoming a new trend in the Championship.

Former beetroot factory worker Rickie Lambert scores winner against Scotland on England debut
For the first time in 14 years, England faced their fountain-ruining rivals Scotland on Wednesday evening in a "friendly" at Wembley stadium.
The Three Lions are often accused of a lack of effort, particularly in friendly matches, but from the outset, it was clear that this was a game both sides really wanted to win. Despite falling behind twice, Roy Hodgson's side ended up 3-2 victors, thanks to a winner from Rickie Lambert (and thanks to the Scotland defenders who didn't bother mark him).
Not so long ago, Lambert was earning 20 a day screwing lids onto jars at a beetroot factory. At the age of 31, the Southampton striker was given an unlikely debut, coming on in the 67th minute for (a very rusty but uninjured) Wayne Rooney. Two minutes later he scored the winner, and could have put away two more had the post and Scotland keeper Allan McGregor not intervened.
Lambert ? who also scored minutes into his Premier League debut ? wasn't even aware he had earned his first England call-up last week, only finding out while checking his phone after being at his wife's side while she gave birth to their third child.
It's a wonderful story for a man who has had an unconventional route to the top, and proof that picking players in form rather than big names is a virtuous approach. Hopefully, he won't join David Nugent and Francis Jeffers in becoming an England player with only one cap and one goal.
Elsewhere in the match, James Morrison opened the scoring while Joe Hart was caught daydreaming about shampoo, Theo Walcott finished beautifully for his first England goal at Wembley, Vancouver Whitecaps forward Kenny Miller scored a brilliant second goal and Danny Welbeck connected with a Steven Gerrard free kick.
