Seattle Sounders defender Patrick Ianni wins MLS goal of the year award

As Philippe Mexes and half of Chelsea's back line have proven this year, sometimes defenders can score better than their teammates who are actually expected to do so. Further proving that to be true was Seattle Sounders defender Patrick Ianni, who has won the MLS Goal of the Year award for his stellar volley off a free kick against Kansas City.

It was the only goal the 27-year-old former U.S. youth international scored in his 16 matches this season, so it seems to go without saying that he is definitely a believer in quality over quantity. It might not have been quite as good as last year's winner from Darlington Nagbe or Eric Hassli's tremendous runner-up against Seattle (or his Puskas Award nominated goal this year), but that's really shouldn't cause Ianni to lose sleep.
