Didier Drogba voted Chelsea?s greatest ever player over Steve Sidwell, all others

Didier Drogba was voted the Chelsea's greatest ever player in an online poll conducted by Chelsea Magazine and this week he collected his award. Beating out club legends like Peter "The King of Stamford Bridge" Osgood, Chopper Harris, Gianfranco Zola, Bobby Tambling, John Terry and Frank Lampard, Drogba said that he felt the honor was perhaps "too big" for him. But coming off a season in which he carried the team to a first ever Champions League title and the fact that voters were likely on the younger side since the vote was conducted on the internet helps explain the result.

Drogba has been training at Chelsea's Cobham facilities during the Chinese Super League offseason. "I still feel a part of Chelsea, even if I am not here. My son plays here!" Drogba told the club's official website. Surely the expectations for that kid aren't too high at all.

U.S. aims to close gap on Mexico, the world

MEXICO CITY -- The United States hopes its historic victory at Estadio Azteca is a precursor of sorts, but nobody is mistaking it as a shift in the balance within the region's primary rivalry. The gap separating the Americans from Mexico remains intact, and the only questions concern how great is the chasm and what must be done to bridge it. Mexico's focus on youth development has created a golden generation of players and could signal El Tri's arrival among the truly elite in international soccer.

Italian newspaper depicts Leo Messi and Diego Maradona in Michelangelo?s Creation of Adam

Operating under the supposition that the Mayans were right and Friday December 21st will bring the end of days, Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport used it's 'final' edition on Thursday to pay tribute to some of the greatest moments in sporting history.

Nominated events include Abebe Bikila barefoot victory in the 1960 Olympic marathon, Zinedine Zidane's transfer to Juventus and Maradona's ridiculous goal against Belgium at the 1986 World Cup.

To illustrate the feature, the front page of Italy's famous pink paper is a masterful photoshop of The Creation of Adam, a section of the Sistine Chapel ceiling painted by Michelangelo in the sixteenth century.

The original Biblical creation narrative painting depicts God bringing life to Adam. In Gazetta's version, the role of God is played by Maradona, who is touching fingers with a naked-as-the-day-he-was-born Lionel Messi.

God is flanked by sporting heroes including Michael Jordan, David Beckham, swimmers Federica Pellegrini and Michael Phelps, cyclist Eddy Merckx and motorcycle champions Giacomo Agostini and Valentino Rossi.

The full cover also includes the likes of Roger Federer, Ayrton Senna and Vicente del Bosque. See it in all its maybe-a-bit-sacrilegious glory below...

Sweden adds new word to dictionary in honor of Zlatan Ibrahimovic

It's been a year of many honors for Zlatan Ibrahimovic -- a sweater from an American artist, a song from a French rapper and now a new word in his native Sweden. The Swedish Language Council has added the word "zlatanera," a verb that means "to Zlatan" or "to dominate," to the national dictionary in what is easily the greatest ever addition to human language.

From the Daily Mail:

The word was originally coined on Les Guignols, a popular satirical puppet show - similar to Spitting Image - from French station Canal Plus, whose characters are in awe of the PSG striker.

To recognise this, the Swedes have even acknowledged the original French spelling of ?zlataner?, simply tweaking to create ?zlatanera? and officially defined it as ?from the French: to dominate on and off the field.?

It's worth noting that Zlatan doesn't even speak French (though he is fluent in four other languages). But before he's done with PSG, he will stomp on that language's face until every word is a variation of his name.

Keane, Galaxy top Seattle 3-0

CARSON, Calif. -- Robbie Keane couldn't help himself. Christian Wilhelmsson's 67th-minute rebound touch off a Landon Donovan shot appeared to be headed -- a bit slowly, albeit -- for the back of the net in Sunday's Western Conference Finals leadoff leg between the Los Angeles Galaxy and Seattle Sounders. But Keane, the productive Irish striker, just had to jump in and slam the ball behind Seattle keeper Michael Gspurning for the Galaxy's third and final goal in their 3-0 win.

Referee holds up ?Respect? armband as defense against angry manager

Players and referees have been wearing armbands and patches as part of UEFA's Respect campaign and they are routinely ignored as the exact opposite behavior is often exhibited. But the ref for Saturday's Eredivisie match between Groningen and VVV, Serdar Gozubuyuk, tried to use his "Respect" armband as a shield from the furious shouts of Groningen manager Robert Maaskant.

Groningen were forced to play almost the whole match with 10 men after Leandro Bacuna was sent off in the sixth minute, so Maaskant had plenty of time to be angry at the officials. In the 57th minute, with the score still 0-0, the ref had enough and held up his armband in front of Maaskant.

Respect for match officials is an especially important topic in the Netherlands at the moment asa linesman died after being beaten by players at a youth match earlier this month. This likely influenced Gozubuyuk's decision to take his stand, which seemed to defuse the situation. Maybe more officials should give this a try when surrounded by players upset with their decisions?

Zlatan Ibrahimovic?s last-minute holiday gift guide

Happy Zlatanmas, everyone. I am Zlatan.

I have already given my gift to all of you in the form of the greatest goal ever scored and the continuation of my violent immortality. You're welcome. Now I will give you another gift by telling you procrastinators what presents to get for the people on your list. I am like an elf, except taller than you and powerful enough to inflict bears with body dysmorphia. Let's begin.

For anyone with an iPad: The "I am Zlatan" biography app. This is an interactive version of my autobiography, which has been shortlisted for The August Prize. Can you name another book on that shortlist, let alone one that can be purchased as an iPad Zlapp that includes videos of me scoring goals and begins with a cast of characters page that lists Fabio Capello as a "Demon Manager"? No. This is the greatest gift of all and perfect for anyone you would like to enlighten and/or smite with the force of my boot through their imagination. Prepare to make people weep and convulse from joy and Zlatan induced seizures. Consider that the warning I am legally obligated to provide.

For anyone without an iPad: "Io, Ibra" -- the Italian version of "I am Zlatan" in paperback. It doesn't matter if the person you give it to doesn't understand Italian. Especially if the recipient is an older person, comprehending the amount of pure truth this book contains would only make them regret all the other books they've read throughout their Zlatanless lives.

Stocking stuffer: Are you on a tight budget because you're not getting paid more money than actually exists to play for PSG? Zlatan knows what it's like to not have money so I have the perfect Zlidea for you too. Just print out the following image and give it to everyone you see. It has restorative powers and if it is stared at long enough, the viewer will have a religious experience in which my hair bun increases fertility and prevents gum disease.

For Pep Guardiola: The holiday season is a time for goodwill to all. Even Pep. It is a time when we put aside our differences and celebrate the joys of Zlife as we unite in peace and serenity. So for Pep I will recommend a very special gift. A gift he alreadyreceivedonce before. A gift he did not appreciate. A gift he gave away. And a gift that forced him to leave football after realizing what a catastrophic mistake he had made. That gift? A koi fish. That is actually a red dragon. That is actually me. I will burst out of the wrapping paper and make the presents he just gave his loved ones look insignificant by comparison. It will be the best day of his life, but also the worst.

Head stomp!

Ronaldo loses 37 pounds on Brazilian weight-loss reality TV show

In September, Brazilian legend Ronaldo aimed to repair his "bad relationship with the scales" by participating in a reality TV show that would help him lose the excess pounds he gained in the latter stages of his career and post-retirement.

After three months of Gangnam Style dancing and topless Pilates on the'Medida Certa' show, the three-time FIFA Player of the Year has made sure the name 'Fat Ronaldo' is anachronistic by shifting an impressive 37 pounds from his 260-pound frame.

AFP
reports:

Sunday night in front of a live television audience, Ronaldo tipped the scales at 101 kilos (222 pounds) and his waistline went down from 107 centimeters (42 inches) to 93 centimeters.

The 2014 World Cup organizing committee member set a goal of being fit enough to take part in a Zinedine Zidane charity match, taking place in Porto Alegreon Wednesday.

While Ronny has credited his weight loss on a gruelling exercise regime and sensible diet, presumably it can also be attributed to themedication he has been taking for the thyroid problem he claimed to have when retiring.

FUT 13 Hacked?

Earlier this afternoon, twitter lit up. To the point where “15 Million” was listed as a related search to FIFA 13. Why? Because UT appears to have been hacked in some way, but we can’t seem to find anything concrete. All we know is that some ridiculous bids were being put in on certain players, [...]

Monaco manager Claudio Ranieri threatens to kill his players if they don?t win

A 3-0 loss to Caen dropped Monaco to second in the Ligue 2 table and now manager Claudio Ranieri has declared that if his players don't win their next match, he will kill them. Because what's a better way to motivate people than by threatening to end their life for failing at a game?

From Reuters:

"I am angry. Physically we were second best and here is the result. I want to win. We have to win. Otherwise, I am going to kill them," the former AS Roma and Juventus coach, who joined last May, told a news conference on Wednesday.

"The teams we face are more compact than we are. They give 100 percent. Since we do not, it is difficult for us."

This is definitely something Arsene Wenger should try with Arsenal. Probably after smearing goat blood all over himself and swinging a battle axe.

Neymar is having a wonderful time at Disney World

As a reward for helping Santos finish in eighth place in the Brazilian Campeonato, Neymar has treated himself to a trip to the land where dreams come true and professional footballers can look cool wearing Mickey Mouse hoodies while posing with struggling actresses pretending to be Disney princesses.

While most Instagram users take arty pictures of their feet on the beach while on vacation, the 20-year-old forward has been documenting the childlike thrills of his trip to Disney World on his feed.

Perhaps the Brazilian is compensating for the fact that he was never taken to the Orlando theme park as a child, a gesture he is apparently repaying in kind to his own son, who isconspicuouslyabsent from the pictures...

@NJR92

Neymar and a friend enjoy the Hollywood Tower of Terror enough to hold hands, but not enough to actually buy the picture of them on the ride.

@NJR92

The Santos star blasts some air guitar before boarding the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. "Aerosmith formed 22 years before Neymar was born," said a DT writer who now feels incredibly old.

Who looks more ridiculous: the guy dressed as a "Toy Story" army man or the guy wearing jorts and bright blue sneakers?

Martin Skrtel does first ever tattoo on a fan for Hillsborough charity

In an attempt to raise money for the families of the Hillsborough disaster victims and their pursuit of justice, 96 fans got tattooed at a shop in Liverpool. Only one man was brave enough to let Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, who had never tattooed anything in his life prior to this, do the tattooing.

Skrtel was only tasking with filling in a bit of the outline done by an actual tattoo artist, but he was still far more nervous about the endeavor than man he was about to take a needle to. "Is this the strangest afternoon you've had as a Liverpool player?" Skrtel is asked, to which he is too bewildered to just say "yes."

"My hand was shaking...I think this was the first time and the last time, as well, " he said when asked if he will challenge Daniel Agger as the club's resident tattoo artist.

Regardless of his shaky hand, the tattoos raised 1,000 for the cause. And it could still raise more if a tattoo removal shop agrees to donate all profits from erasing any mistakes made by Skrtel.

Jonathan Bornstein is quite popular in Honduras. He might want to consider hiding there for a while. The Pro Bowl Should Be Replaced, Not Saved

Once upon a time, NFL players cared about playing football in the Pro Bowl. This is what they did yesterday instead. Notice how nobody seemed all that interested in hitting anyone. U.S. aims to close gap on Mexico, the world

Lionel Messi hugged by pitch invader during match against Atletico Madrid

Lionel Messi scored his 89th and 90th goals of this calendar year in Barcelona's 4-1 win against Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou -- a feat that one fan thought was deserving of a hug. So, during injury time, that fan hopped out of the stands and went right for Messi, who had control of the ball near the touchline, and gave him a tender embrace before quickly being dragged away.

Messi seemed understandably stunned by what happened, but he has never been one to treat pitch invaders harshly. During an international friendly between Argentina and Germany in August, he shook hands with a German intruder and during a match against Mexico he even signed an autograph for a kid who was getting pulled away. At this rate, it's only a matter of time before he starts cooking hot meals for these trespassers and doing their taxes.

Video of the hug right this way...

One solitary Udinese fan showed up in Genoa for his team?s match against Sampdoria

Udinese traveled to Genoa for its Serie A match against Sampdoria on Monday and one man showed up to support the team in the otherwise empty away end. Whether that man (and no, he isn't Eddie Vedder) happened to be a local Udinese supporter or the only person who made the 600-mile round trip from Udine to follow his club isn't clear, but he was there and he was apparently the only one.

His presence was such a delight to the home supporters that instead of abusing him as football fans tend to do with larger visiting crowds, they cheered him and he gave them a wave.

His effort proved well worth it though, as Udinese won 2-0.

UPDATE: The lone Udinese fan has been identified as 37-year-old wine merchant Arrigo Brovedani. His account of what happened is really quite wonderful. From Football Italia:

"I was in Genoa for a work meeting and usually take a trip round the area around this time of year, but it was pure coincidenceUdinesewere playing there at the same time. So I took advantage andorganiseda ticket," he toldudinetoday.it.

"If I am in a city whereUdinesehappen to be playing, clients tend to send me free tickets, as they know my passion for the team. This time it wasn't possible and I had to sort it out myself. [...]

"I made the journeyto Genoa, arrived at the stadium and only then did IrealiseI was the onlyUdinesefan there! At that point the stewards asked if I wanted to sit in the main stand, but I insisted on going into the away end, seeing as I had paid for that ticket.

"I had theUdineseflag with me, as I carry it everywhere in my car. TheSamp fans applauded me after we scored and they were really very kind. The stewards offered me coffee, then theSampdirectors arrived to give me a team jersey.

"At the final whistle when I left,Sampfans came towards me and offered me a drink, complimenting me on my passion. It's a shame I couldn't stay long, as I had to run due to work commitments."

Brovedani says he doesn't know when his next away match will be. In a time when fan violence, misbehavior and hate are all top headlines, it's nice to see a reminder that people can be decent towards one another at a sporting event.

Roger Federer shows his soccer skills with Tommy Haas during Brazilian tournament

Roger Federer is currently in South America topping up his bank balance with the "Gillette Federer Tour" ? the same event that brought you Caroline Wozniacki's Serena Williams tribute.

During his match with Tommy Haas in Sao Paolo, the seventeen-time Grand Slam champ entered the arena sporting a full Brazil strip and dribbling an oversized tennis ball onto the court. If fans weren't already enamored with the man whose man is in the title of the tournament they paid to see, they were certainly won over by his tribute to the Seleo.

After some silky moves, Feds proceeded to play a spot of tennis-football with Haas, before both men played actual tennis wearing full Brazil strips. The Swiss legend won the match in two straight sets, and his money-spinning tour will roll on to Argentina later this week where he will play Juan Martin Del Potro (probably in La Albiceleste colors).

While in the Brazilian City, Federer also met with Pele, who gave him a signed Brazilian 1958 World Cup jersey in exchange for an autographed tennis racket. The former Santos star posted a picture of his gift on his Twitter feed, before resuming his normal service of Tweeting about companies that endorse him.

Javier Pastore refused entry to Zlatan Ibrahimovic?s parking lot at PSG training ground

It was only a matter of time until the egomania of the PSG "project" spilled into the parking lot, and that day has now come.

At Paris-Saint-Germain's Camp des Loges training ground, there are two parking lots: one in which players have individually assigned spaces, and another closer to the entrance of the facility reserved for executives and club officials.

Since Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not be constrained by any man's predetermined parking arrangements and no one dares to question him, he is allowed to park in the executive lot.

According to several news outlets, Javier Pastore tried to park his ?160,000 Audi R8 Spyder in Zlatan's special parking zone on Wednesday, but was promptly denied entry by security staff. Apparently furious, the midfielder performed a U-turn and drove into a gate on his way back to his regular space. Translated from Sportune.fr:

[French newspaper ] L'Equipe said the Argentinean, visibly upset, hit the gate of the Camp des Loges training centre on purpose with the back of his vehicle.

It is not known whether Pastore's R8 is damaged, but his pride certainly took a big dent during the incident.

The French press are also keen to point out that the Argentinean has had his car customized with a black and red color scheme ? a fitting combination of hues for a man who recently told an Italian magazine he longs to play for AC Milan.
