Abby Wambach scores goals even when she?s not trying to
As part of the U.S. women's Olympic victory tour, they played a friendly against Australia in Colorado that also served as coach Pia Sundhage's last match before returning to Sweden. Though the U.S. eventually won 6-2, the score was still even at 2-2 in the 53rd minute when Alex Morgan took a shot from just outside the box that deflected off Abby Wambach's foot, floated towards the far post as the keeper dove towards the near post, took a big bounce and spun its way into the goal.
Wambach appeared to be trying to get her foot out of the way of Morgan's shot when contact was made, but it was her touch that started the ball's unusual path to the net so she was credited as the scorer. And with that goal, she is now just 12 behind Mia Hamm's all-time record. She will likely score her next one while asleep at home on a non-matchday.

DTotD: America-MG keeper delivers flying boot to striker?s chin, gets sent off
Early in the second half of a Brazilian second division match between America Mineiro and Bragantino, America goalkeeper Neneca did everything he could to keep to score at 0-0 by collecting the ball and then delivering a flying kick to an opposing striker's face. Except that backfired and he was sent off.
Neneca was shown a straight red and a penalty was awarded for the kick that laid out Diego Barboza, who later scored as Bragantino won 2-0.

John Terry and everyone else are ?unconscious racists? says John Barnes
Two months after a court of law found Chelsea captain John Terry not guilty of racially abusing QPR's Anton Ferdinand last season, an independent commission with a lower burden of proof has found Terry guilty of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand, resulting in a four-match ban and 220,000 fine from the FA. While Terry awaits the full written reasoning behind the decision before he considers appealing the decision, there is no shortage of opinions on the matter.
Former Liverpool and England player John Barnes has offered a more pragmatic conclusion than most, saying that John Terry isn't a racist, but he is an "unconscious racist." Which Barnes says most everyone is, including himself.
From the Independent:
"I would never, ever say John Terry is a racist, but I would say John Terry is no more or less racist than anyone else. I actually have a bit of empathy with John Terry. Ninety-nine per cent of us, me included, are unconscious racists, because we have an opinion on someone based on history, what we have seen, and what we've seen on television.
"If a man turned up in a turban to manage Liverpool when I was playing for them, I would question him. If a white German, who I've never met, turned up to manage Liverpool I'll question him ? but not as much as I would question the man with the turban based on the fact that 'he's from India ? so what does he know?'
"People say things without realising. I've had this discussion with a lot of old players from Liverpool and they all say, 'I never called anyone a black this or black that.' I understand that because people do not even realise they are doing it. If John Terry did it I think he probably would not even remember doing it where a conscious racist would remember."
Well, I suppose Barnes deserves some credit for being honest about his own biases, although in doing so one might question just how unconscious those biases are. It's also unclear what opinions about others "based on history" would have to do with the Terry-Ferdinand situation, but this point was far more interesting than those espoused by 99 percent of the other pundits out covering this.

Thierry Henry scores off the back post, directly from a corner kick
Thierry Henry scored the first and last goals in the New York Red Bulls' 3-1 win against Columbus Crew and he finished off his brace in spectacular fashion with a goal scored off the back post directly from a corner kick in the third minute of injury time (54 seconds into the video above).
Columbus' backup keeper Matt Lampson had just come off the bench in the 85th minute and Henry took advantage of that fact by duping him into thinking he was going to take a short corner. He lured Lampson in, then he launched the ball off the back post and in for an Olimpico goal.
Henry now has 13 goals on the season, fourth best in MLS, and the Red Bulls are just two points behind Kansas City in the Eastern Conference.

Wallets, watches and phones stolen from players at Chelsea?s training complex
In the latest episode of Law and Order: Cobham Mysteries, the Daily Mail's Neil Ashton reports that exactly "six wallets, nine mobile phones and several watches" have been stolen from staff and players during a training session at their Cobham complex, prompting a police investigation. And yes, it would be very easy to make a John Terry joke right now.
From the Daily Mail:
Players are now demanding to know how their possessions could have been taken during an hour-and-a-half training session.
A club spokesman said: 'A number of personal items were recently stolen from the academy dressing room area. The matter is currently being investigated by the police. CCTV footage is being handed to them and confirms the thefts were carried out by a lone intruder not connected with the training ground site.
'Other local premises near to the training ground were targeted that day and may be connected. Nobody at Chelsea FC is under suspicion.'
Although Chelsea insist the thefts are not an inside job, police have yet to make an arrest after they were called in last week.
This is just the latest in a series of strange happenings at Cobham. Earlier in the year, an internal investigation was launched after a smoke bomb went off inside the complex. Two reserve team players admitted to playing a part in it and the player who set it off, Jacob Mellis, was kicked off the team. Before that, Ashley Cole shot an intern with an air rifle and more recently, Chelsea security personnel broke one of the handles on the Champions League trophy while taking pictures with it.
Anyway, this petty theft business could just be the groundwork for when Fernando Torres gets "stolen" out of the complex so the club can cash in on the insurance. It's a genius plan.
Arsene Wenger doesn?t understand why Robin Van Persie left Arsenal
Arsene Wenger's latest Eurosport column is a glowing review of Robin van Persie brilliance as a footballer and a person. It's not the kind of thing you might expect a Premier League manager to write immediately after both being forced to sell the player in question to a major rival and watching that player instantly becomes that major rival's top scorer. But mixed in with all the superlatives and praise, Wenger also shares his unresolved feelings on the matter.
Wenger writes:
Now he's gone, don't ask the fans to understand what is not understandable. Even I do not understand, and I am deep at the heart of the decisions. You have to deal with it. That's life. We are here to help people to express their talents. A coach must have a positive influence on their players' lives.
I would have preferred Van Persie to sign for a club in a foreign country, in order to avoid playing against him several times per season, but it's a fine challenge for us to prove we can exist after such a move, to show we can score goals, play well and survive everything.
He puts a positive spin on the situation with those last lines, but its his dismissal of Van Persie's departure as something that is not understandable that's odd. Has Wenger already forgotten the statement from Van Persie himself that forced the move? In it, Van Persie clearly states "I personally have had a great season but my goal has been to win trophies with the team" and "we [he and Wenger] in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward."
In Wenger's column, he describes Van Persie as a football obsessive who is on a "quest for perfection." So it would be reasonable to assume that a player on a quest for perfection and has stated his desire to win trophies would want to join a club that has won silverware more recently than seven years ago and has a manager who agrees with him on how a club should move forward.
Wenger says he doesn't understand even though he is "deep at the heart of the decisions." If it's true that he doesn't understand why his best players want to leave even when they put it in writing then that's very unsettling for Arsenal. But Arsene Wenger is, of course, a very smart man. He must know what is happening here, which means he just doesn't want to admit it and has somehow decided that portraying himself as confused is better than recognizing this indignity.
Anyway, Wenger is remaining positive (at least publicly) and it's easy to see why. While Man United had their attention on Van Persie, Wenger signed Own Goal away from them on a free transfer at the deadline. Plus Gervinho finally realized that Arsenal are paying to play football.

Ronaldo to star in weight-loss reality TV show
During his playing days, Ronaldo struggled with weight even more than he struggled to shake off transexual prostitue scandals, but since retiring from the beautiful game last year, the legendary striker has ballooned in size.
In an attempt to curb his waistline ? and because reality TV is the only way famous people can overcome personal issues ? the three-time World Player of the Year is participating in a weight-loss reality TV show.
The Brazilian, who admits to having "a bad relationship with the scales," has already started filming the show, which will air in Brazil on the "Medid Certa" segment of the hugely popular "Fantstico" show from Sunday Sept. 22. Eurosport translates quotes the big guy gave to iG Gente:

"Maybe if I didn't have the pressure of everybody watching me trying to lose weight then I wouldn't be able to do it.

Ronny's main target over the next three months is to be fit enough to participate in a charity match with former teammate Zinedine Zidane in December.

Cagliari keeper Michael Agazzi makes a backheel save against Palermo
Cagliari scored in the 88th minute against Palermo to salvage a 1-1 draw, but goalkeeper Michael Agazzi's "dangerous" save early in the match was just as impressive as Marco Sau's late equalizer.
A swerving Fabrizio Miccoli free kick from considerable distance in the 27th minute caught Agazzi falling towards the post as the ball curled behind him. Agazzi reacted quickly though and managed to make the save with a falling backheel.
After the match, Agazzi had a sense of humor about it. From Football Italia:
"It's a save I study in training," joked Agazzi on Sky Sport Italia.
"I was incredibly lucky! Would I be able to repeat it? Certainly, but I'd wreck my knee! I already snapped one cruciate ligament in my career.
"It really was an incredibly dangerous save to make."
It wasn't quite Rene Higuita's scorpion save, but it got the job done. And Agazzi's knee is still in tact.

Roy Hodgson thought Steven Gerrard ?extremely unlucky? to get sent off for comical challenge
England salvaged a 1-1 draw in their World Cup qualifier against Ukraine thanks to a Frank Lampard penalty kick in the 87th minute. While Lampard scored his third goal in England's two qualifiers thus far, captain Steven Gerrard got himself sent off just one minute later after being booked a second time for trying to reach the ball by lunging between Denys Garmash's legs and falling on his back.
That prompted England manager Roy Hodgson to prove the lengths to which he will defend his players. From the Telegraph:
"Steven Gerrard is extremely unlucky to be sent off," Hodgson said. "The two fouls he was adjudged to have committed weren't worthy of cards. I thought all the yellow cards were very harsh. I don't think there were a lot of bad fouls, or fouls full stop. So I'm going to say there were far too many cards for the fouls committed."
This was the first time Gerrard has been sent off in his England career and it will keep him out of their next qualifier against San Marino. Which he can probably afford to miss.

New York Red Bulls fans the latest to have spelling difficulties at an MLS match
Wednesday night was not a good one for the few New York Red Bulls fans who attended their match against Sporting Kansas City. Not only was the 2-0 loss the club's first at home this season, but the best opponent slam banner they could come up with was a tired Wizard of Oz reference that was draped across the front row in prime position for the TV cameras. Real Madrid?s bus got a parking ticket before Champions League match
How bad have things been going for Real Madrid lately? Well, their team bus can't even park outside the team's hotel before a Champions League match in their own city without getting a ticket.
The bus was waiting for the team to come out of the hotel and depart for the Bernabeu for their Champions League group-stage opener against Man City and while it sat there, a parking enforcement worker wrote out a ticket in front of the gathered press and stuck it under a windshield wiper. The team eventually boarded and left for the stadium, but the woman who wrote the ticket had to be a plant sent in by Man City. Noel Gallagher had to be behind this.
Somewhere Xavi is saying, "Why can't they get a fine when they park the bus against us?"

Brazilian manager protests expulsion by asking cop to handcuff him, resists when it happens
Like the players they oversee, football managers can also be prone to the dramatic arts. Walter Knario of Brazilian third division club Cambe was sent off for comments he made to the referee during his side's scoreless draw against PSTC, but the enraged manager refused to go. Instead, he dropped to his knees in front of a military police officer and held up his hands asking to be cuffed during the first half. When the officer obliged his request and pulled out his cuffs, Knario suddenly changed his mind and resisted the cop's attempt to shackle him.
Knario's own staff then stepped in and escorted him off before he got himself in any more trouble. The lesson here? Cops will call your bluff.

Lyon?s Bafetimbi Gomis celebrated goal against Sparta Prague by sucking a pacifier
Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis scored the first goal of his side's 2-1 Europa League win against Sparta Prague and he celebrated by sucking on a pacifier. Gomis scored with a header off a corner kick in the 59th minute. He then pulled out a baby pacifier and jogged around with his teammates to celebrate his achievement (video here) before handing off his prop to a Lyon staffer on the touchline.
The pacifier celebration was a tribute to his newborn child, but let's review the facts: This is a grown man sucking a pacifier and wearing a 3D shirt. Clearly he is operating on another level.
Javi Martinez reportedly tried to sneak into Athletic Bilbao?s training complex to get the stuff he left
It turns out forcing a move from Athletic Bilbao to Bayern Munich was only the initial stage of the covert mission Javi Martinez thinks his life has become. Martinez (who will henceforth be known as "Javi Bond") apparently left all his personal belongs at Athletic's training complex and hasn't had any human interaction with anyone at the club since he fled Spain at the end of August when Bayern dumped ?4o million to trigger his buyout clause, so he of course had to retrieve his things in the most unnecessary way possible.
Marca has the details (which will be used as the screenplay for the Javi Bond thriller that will be in theaters next summer):
Athletic Club de Bilbao's training grounds, CiudadDeportiva, in Lezama. Two o'clock on Sunday morning. A weekend off at the club's training facilities as there is no activity until Monday. The gates are closed and there is no-one around apart from the security guard who is suddenly startled by the arrival of a car.
The guard watches with great surprise as someone gets out of the car and jumps over a small fence to get to the building's main entrance. The guard is on his way to stop the person he assumes to be a thief, when he realises that it is Javi Martnez, the ex-Athletic player, now with Bayern.
The international midfielder asks the security officer to open the door to the dressing room because he wants to get his things (boots, clothes and other personal items) that he was unable to retrieve after the buy-out clause came into effect to end his association with Athletic.
Javi Bond eventually persuaded the guard to let him into the dressing room, but when he got there, the stuff he left in his locker was gone! According to Marca, he was only able to salvage a single pair of boots that "had been discarded nearby."
Few people would be surprised by a club clearing out the locker of a former player who left his things behind and didn't tell anyone he'd be back (in the dead of night) to pick them up. But Javi Bond is one of those few.
UPDATE: Javi Bond tweeted, presumably in reference to his late night retreival mission, "It's amazing that there are people who believe that this story is true..." Of course, he could also be referring to the story about David Beckham and Alexi Lalas buying Malaga, so who knows.
UPDATE II: Bilbao paper El Correo has put together a diagram of Javi Bond's daring yet very direct mission.
