Bahrain went into Wednesday night's World Cup qualifier with Indonesia needing to overcome a nine-goal deficit to have any hope of progressing out of its group. As luck would have it,it managed to beatits feckless opponents 10-0.
Following the serendipitous result ? in which it even managed to miss two penalties ? the side managed by former England head honcho Peter Taylor now faces a match-fixing probe from FIFA. Reports the BBC:
"Fifa will conduct a routine examination of this game and its result," a spokesman told BBC Sport.
"[This is due to] the unusual outcome in relation to the result expectation and head-to-head history - and in the interests of maintaining unequivocal confidence in our game."
Indonesia's fortunes in the match weren't helped by the fact thatits goalkeeper was dismissed after two minutes, and it is believed many ofits senior players were banned for having attempted to form a breakaway league in the country. Also, coming up against a side whose manager was sacked by Leicester, Wycombe and Crystal Palace is never easy.
If any foul play was involved in the result, it was in vain: Fellow Group E side Qatar pulled off a 2-2 draw with Iran, leaving Bahrain outside of Asian zone qualifying.
