Adelaide Utd offers trial to player who doesn?t exist

Following an extensive search for homegrown talent, Australian A-League side Adelaide United announcedlast week that it was handing trials to two new overseas prospects. The first was Portuguese striker Fabio Ferreira, who made a few appearances for Chelsea's second string in 2008-09.

The second was a promising 25-year-old American named Dexter Rosales, whose resume includes Ajax, Valencia, River Plate, Club Atletico Junior and the U.S. at Under-17, Under-20 and Under-23 levels. There's just one thing stopping Rosalesthrowingsome shrimp on the barbie in South Australia: the fact that he doesn't exist.

Up until Monday, Adelaide's scouts were satisfied with their player research, which probably consisted of viewing Rosales' (since deleted) error-strewn Wikipedia page, and this video of someone who almost certainly doesn't answer to the name Dexter. Now, however, the Reds have admitted they have been duped by a prankster. Goal.com reports:

"It has been a strange few days with all the speculation around this mystery man - it doesn't look great from our end," a Reds media spokesman told Sportal. "We're not the first club to be given a false lead with a supposed trialist, but other clubs probably just don't promote it to the world like we did."

With Adelaide seemingly one of several clubs to fall victim to the non-existent Rosales, credit must be given to the perpetrators of the elaborate hoax.

Valencia, Ajax and River Plate have now all confirmed that Rosales did not play for them, with the Dutch side admitting that some images of the imaginary player that have surfaced online are actually those of their former employee and current Seattle Sounders midfielder Mauro Rosales.

Adelaide's scouts and manager have been left red faced by the incident, but they can seek comfort in the fact that many other clubs have been pranked in this manner, most notably Southampton in 1996. Manager Graeme Souness played Ali Dia in a Premier League match after the club received a phone call and endorsement from his "cousin" George Weah. He came on as a sub during a game with Leeds, and was so astoundingly terrible that he was subbed off again. And of course, he was no relation to Weah.

Carlos Tevez?s debut as a British Open caddy didn?t go so well

When Carlos Tevez took his unapproved mid-seasonsabbaticalfrom Man City last season, he spent his time playing golf. He even won a pro-am tournament with fellow Argentine and 2008 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Andres Romero. And after spending all that quality time together, the two seem to have formed a friendship because for the final round of the 2012 British Open, Romero let Tevez serve as his caddy.

So how did Romero do with Tevez on his bag? Not so great. With four double bogeys and just one birdie on the day, Romero shot an 82 for what was easily his worst round of the week to finish last among the 83 players to make the cut. With Tevez just spectating on Saturday, he shot a 77 after being 1-under par through the first two days.

After the round, Tevez admitted to not being very helpful (via The Sun):

"It was good to enjoy the last day with him. This was the dream of everybody who plays golf. It was my first Major!"

"It was difficult to carry the bag because it weighed so much but it was fine.

"I couldn't give any advice about the slopes but I just carried the bag and supported him each hole.

"Andres is a professional and he knows everything already. We worked together very well."

Except for that whole score thing.

You can't blame Romero's misfortune all on Tevez, though. In 2007, he led the tournament with just two holes to play before finishing third. Still, it probably didn't help when Romero asked Tevez to clean the same club twice and Tevez refused before walking off.*

*This didn't actually happen.

Bebe triumphs with late equalizer for Manchester United (in a friendly)

We've all made jokes about Bebe and his ill-advised, sight-unseen transfer from the Portuguese third division to Manchester United for 7.4 million in 2010. Though it seemed his season-long loan to Besiktas only made things worse as he was plagued by injury and disciplinary issues, Bebe has returned to Man United and he is ready to make the club his springboard to superstardom. Or something.

Man United trailed Ajax Cape Town 1-0 in the second preseason friendly of their South African tour until Bebe presumably said something like, "Let me show you how it's done," and scored a skillful goal to save his club (yes, HIS club) a minor embarrassment.

Is this the start of the Bebe era at Man United? I think we all know the answer...

SUPERCLASICO: Big guns lead explosive Galaxy

CARSON -- The Galaxy are deep into their transition from woeful underachievers to Major League Soccer title contenders, and although the cast of contributors is steadily growing -- just like last year -- it's the three Designated Players who have made the difference. It was so again Saturday night, when L.A. pounded archrival Chivas USA, 3-1, as Landon Donovan scored a pair of goals, Robbie Keane added another plus an assist, and David Beckham picked up two assists in front of 25,180 at Home Depot Center.

Mario Balotelli says he would be a UFC fighter if he wasn?t a footballer

To mark the release of Man City's new kit, Umbro conducted brief interviews with several of the players and the one with Mario Balotelli was, of course, the best.

He starts by being thoroughly unenthusiastic about the new kit before going on to explain why he wears the No. 45. He then shares his admiration for Drake (who he had dinner with last season) and then with the intensity of a thousand suns (or one Mario Balotelli), he says that if he wasn't a footballer, he would want to be a UFC fighter.

"Probably I would want to do UFC...yeah. I really love it," he says with the utmost seriousness. But Mario as a mixed martial arts fighter? I can see it...

Meanwhile, Samir Nasri gave the most pitiful interview in which he reveals that he has his housekeeper cook for him because he's always alone and incapable of feeding himself.

Thousands of fans gather around Argentina to beg Juan Roman Riquelme not to leave Boca Juniors

Shortly after Boca Juniors lost to Corinthians in the Copa Libertadores final, 34-year-old Juan Roman Riquelme announced his intention to leave the Argentine giants for a second time. It was adevastatingblow to Boca fans made even worse when word spread that their all-mighty hero might go to Brazil to join Flamengo.

So as Riquelme prepares to leave, as he did in 2002 when he joined Barcelona, thousands of Boca fans have gathered to stage protest in various cities around Argentina (some reports say 10, others two dozen) to beg Riquelme not to go. The largest demonstration included 5,000 at Boca's La Bombonera in Buenos Aires, where supporters filled the streets and made their way to the stadium. According to Ole, the club initially said they wouldn't be let inside due to a lack of security, but eventually relented and the chants of "Riquelme is Boca, Boca is not going!" continued in the stands.

Coincidentally, this is very similar to what happened in London when Manuel Almunia left Arsenal.

In total, Riquelme spent 12 years with Boca Juniors, playing more than 300 matches, winning five Primera Division titles and three Copa Libertadores. He was the Argentine Footballer of the Year four times, the latest coming in 2011. Also, he is magic.

Here's video of the demonstration (skip ahead to 55 seconds in to avoid the studio babble)...

Liverpool?s Glen Johnson struggles to name North American sports teams

Liverpool FC departed for their North American pre-season tour today, but not before challenging Glen Johnson to name as many US and Canadian sports teams as he could in 60 seconds. The Liverpool official site says the right back is a "big fan of American sports", but his failure to name some of the more famous franchises suggests otherwise.

To be fair, Johnson reels off more team names than the average Brit probably could when put on the spot, and he manages to save potentialembarrassmentby successfully naming the Boston baseball outfit that is also owned by his employer.

Meanwhile, Martin Kelly was also quizzed in a segment called "Make yourself sound really boring in a game that lets us learn very little about your personality or knowledge of North America":

New York Red Bulls get Claudio Reyna?s name wrong in press release about his son?s death

Former Manchester City midfielder and U.S. national team captain Claudio Reyna lost his 13-year-old son Jack to cancer last week after a two-year battle. The news of Jack's passing brought in a wave of support from Claudio's former teams and his many fans, but in the New York Red Bulls' haste to issue a press release about their plans to honor Jack Reyna, they got his father's name wrong.

Claudio Reyna played 29 matches over two seasons with New York before retiring in 2008, which apparently wasn't enough to ensure the communications department would remember his name since they announced, "Red Bulls will honor the passing of Carlos Reyna's son Jack during Saturday's match." Carlos Reyna.

The mistake was eventually fixed, but the fact that they got his name wrong in the first place, and while attempting to pay tribute at such a somber time, is pretty awful. Hopefully they do better during the match.

That aside, we offer our condolences to the Reyna family.

Thanks to our tipster for the image.

Real Madrid to charge fans $85-382 to watch UCLA training session

Ahead of its four preseason friendlies in the United States this summer, Real Madrid will hold an "open" training session at the UCLA campus on Aug. 4. It's only "open," however, if you are willing to pay for the privilege of watching Xabi Alonso stretch.

Last year's UCLA training session was closed to the public, but Los Blancos has now decided to capitalize on Californians with an insatiable appetite for seeing millionaires run around cones, charging fans up to $382 for a VIP pass. Marca explains what that package includes:

In addition to giving you a seat in a covered area, the VIP pass includes the opportunity to meet Real Madrid players after training and be photographed with the Casillas, Ronaldo and co. The lucky VIP will also enjoy a continental breakfast at the training facilities chosen by Madrid.

Nearly 400 bones for a cold breakfast at a university campus? If it isn't prepared by Sergio Ramos and fed spoonful-by-spoonful by Mesut Ozil while Jose Mourinho gives out massages, that's not particularly good value.

The cheapest tickets for the event will be $85, which is around $85 more than any other European club has ever had the audacity to charge their fans to watch a training session.

UPDATE: As DT commenter K.Hepburn points out, at least some (if not all) of the money from ticket sales is going towards Children United USA and the LA Galaxy Foundation. Neither of which benefit people who shell out large sums of money for tickets to a training session.

Technically, of course, NFL football never left, as this all happened from March to July, but even that thought didn’t piss on the parades of gridiron fans today as NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Players Association boss DeMaurice Smith stood in front of reporters and announced that both sides agreed to [...]

Liverpool Notes and Euro 2012: France Win and Matchday Nine

The group stage of Euro 2012 has been both captivating and lightning-quick—this first week has flown by, and with only four days left until the first knockout round is set, there’s not much of a slow-down to deal with yet. Man City tried to get morning church bells pushed back in Austria

Man City are spending 12 days training in highaltitude in an Austrian village that was very close to being perfect for their needs. If it weren't for the ancient church bells, cheapmattressesandpresence of ketchup.

From Reuters:

Premier League champions Manchester City tried to silence the bells of a 13th century church so they could sleep longer at their Tyrolean mountain training camp but failed to persuade the authorities to agree to the request.

"They tried to have it put back from 8 until 10 in the morning but they didn't succeed," said a local official in the Austrian village of Seefeld, near Innsbruck.

Carlos Tevez simply does not change his bell-ringing schedule for anyone.

The club did succeed in flying in special ?1,000-eachmattresses, though. And they also rearranged the table settings.

The team, managed by Italian Roberto Mancini, flew in their own Italian chef to supervise kitchen staff in the preparation of pasta-heavy, low-fat meals.

The players are allowed no butter, ketchup or sauces, and items on the dining tables must be arranged in a particular way.

And yes, that "particular way" does involve spelling out "eat it, Fergie" with sugar packets.

Marca thinks blurry Clint Dempsey is Michael Bradley

It appears U.S. national team midfielder Michael Bradley is on the verge of completing a move from Chievo to Roma, so Spanish sports paper Marca was inclined to publish a story on the matter. But instead of using a picture of Michael Bradley, they went with a blurry photo of fellow American and Fulham star Clint Dempsey.

Adding further intrigue to the item is the fact that they claim the 6' 1" Bradley is known as "El Jefecito" (The Little Chief) in the States, which is probably news to everyone except superfan Daniel Timmons of Yakima, Washington, who often mistakes Dempsey for Bradley and thinks that is his nickname.

Thanks to Ryan for the tip!

DTotD: Bahia?s Rodrigo Souza hits Antonio Carlos in the face, both shown yellow cards

Early in Botafogo's 3-0 win over Bahia on Saturday, Bahia striker Rodrigo Suazo connected with a swinging forearm to Botafogo defender Antonio Carlos' face. After quickly getting up from the blow, Antonio Carlos was understandably angry about it, but was kept away from his attacker by the referee.

Once things calmed down and the referee summoned Antonio Carlos back from wandering off, both face smasher and face smashee were shown yellow cards. Antonio Carlos was confused and upset by this, while Suazo refrained from swinging his arm into the referee's face too.

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.

DT Exclusive: The reborn New York Cosmos? superstar (related) 2013 roster

While the new New York Cosmos continue their wait for a spot in MLS, they've decided to join the latest iteration of the North American Soccer League, currently the U.S. second division, and field a team for the 2013 season. Of course, being a second division club means they won't be able to sign the stars of the day as they did in their glory days when the likes of Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia and Carlos Alberto helped them to five NASL titles in the '70s and early '80s. So, they've had to compromise and settle for players with relations (of varying degrees) to the biggest stars in the world.

Here now, presented for the first time, is the dizzyingly spectacular roster for the 2013 New York Cosmos!

Jorge Casillas: Third cousin of Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas, Jorge hasn't spoken to anyone on his dad's side of the family, let alone Iker, in years due to a dispute over a portable grill. Jorge hasn't played as a goalkeeper since he was 10.

Horst Lahm: A childhood friend of Germany captain Philipp Lahm, Horst spent so much time at the Lahm's house that he was jokingly referred to as a member of the family. Though Philipp defriended him on Facebook last year, Horst still uses the Lahm surname. Horst is the inventor of a little known football skill move called "the nipple clamp."

Al Terry: Al's is a common last name, so he's not actually related to Chelsea captain John Terry (to his knowledge, at least!), nor have they ever met. But Al did dress as John for Halloween one year and he still has the shin pads.

Benito Puyol: Benito doesn't have the wild hair of his more famous nephew, but he is willing to wear a wig. Benito was named Player of the Year in his local Over-60 league before suffering a mild stroke.

Gael Clichy: Seriously, it's the real Gael Clichy.

Ryan Gigs: A Ryan Giggs tribute player who even went so far as to sleep with his step-brother's wife, even though he doesn't have a step-brother. Gigs has honed his skills for decades so that they vaguely resemble what Ryan Giggs would do if he were having an exceptionally bad day and accidentally drank the contents of a tranquilizer dart.

Kaka: Did you know there are three different footballers known as Kaka? Which one will it be?! (Hint: It will probably be the one from Real Madrid. He was willing to take a pay cut. He seems sad.)

An actual rino: It will be forced to wear a Gattuso shirt and then slap it in the head.

Phil Messi: The self-proclaimed "biggest Lionel Messi fan in the universe," Phil legally changed his surname to "Messi" and keeps a body pillow with his hero's face drawn on it with him at all times. In a clear show of support, Lionel has failed to renew his restraining order against Phil.

Emile Heskey: Hey, every team has its weak link.

And finally, esteemed captainBarry Ronaldo: Identical twin brother of Cristiano, Barry has filled in for his sibling in some of the world's biggest competitions and failed to meet expectations every single time. When asked about the honor andprivilegeof wearing the armband for the new Cosmos, Barry said, "I think it's giving me a rash."

The rest of the squad will be filled out with some of English legend Bert Tiddle's 18 kids. Reserve your season tickets now!*

*Season tickets are not yet available.

Anatoliy Tymoshchuk reveals what footballers do to relax in the offseason

Following his international duty for Ukraine at Euro 2012 in which he busied himself by making wanker gestures at Franck Ribery, Bayern Munich's Anatoliy Tymoshchuk is spending his brief offseason break in the Maldives.

While he enjoys his time off, Tymoshchuk decided to give fans a glimpse of how a top-flight footballer relaxes on some of the world's most beautiful beaches. Apparently it involves using a computer while wearing scuba equipment.

And how is this different from life during the season? Well, this is how he normally uses the computer...

Shanghai Shenhua fans gave Didier Drogba an overwhelming reception at the airport

Didier Drogba arrived at Pudong International Airport on Saturday to a massive and boisterousreception from fans of his new club, Shanghai Shenhua.

Inside the terminal, Drogba greeted the large number of supporters as camera flashes went off like a constant strobe light and joyous chants of "Didier Drogba la la la la la" rang out. But once Drogba made it outside (1:18 into the video), there were even more fans, who chanted his name loud enough to be heard at Bastian Schweinsteiger's house. They held up Shanghai scarves and Ivory Coast flags and Didier was given abouquetof flowers before he got in a car that took him to his new club. But even after he drove off, the airport party continued as the swarm of supporters stood in the middle of the road and went on signing.

Drogba's two-and-a-half-year deal with Shanghai will reportedly pay him 200,000 a week (making him the highest paid player in China) and reunite him with former Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka, who was accused of being disrespectful by one of the club's fans for not joining the rest of the team in bowing to supporters after a match. From Goal.com:

"I am waiting for him," Anelka said. "There were a lot of games when I was alone in front, I would think if Didier was here the situation would be better. I could pass him the ball."

Well, yes. Yes you could.

Pornstar makes music video to help former Barcelona President Joan Laporta get re-elected

During Joan Laporta's seven-year reign as President of Barcelona, he brought in Ronaldinho, Deco, Samuel Eto'o, and appointed Pep Guardiola as first team manager. Despite these successes, the Spanish politician was ousted in a storm of controversy by former cohort Sandro Rossell in 2010, and has since become a member of Catalan parliament.

Laporta is now said to be seeking re-election at Barcelona, and he's clearly taking the campaign seriously. So seriously, in fact, that he's been supported with a music video from Spanish pornstar Maria Lapiedra. That's the same Maria Lapiedra who earned him ridicule by backing his parliamentary campaign. It's also the same Maria Lapiedra with whom Laporta is romantically involved, and who reportedly enjoyed a recent 'pre-wedding honeymoon' with the divorced father of three.

If you're impressed by the classy production values (sweet choreography, practise field and old Barcelona shirts guys!) then wait until you see some of the lyrics to 'Laporta, mi hombre' ('Laporta, my man'). Here's some excerpts:

The man who brought glory and honor and victory, prestige and value.
The man who punched the Whites with that 6-2 win.
The man who moved my bed, with Catalan fury, manhood and love.

Well, two of those three sentences will probably help his re-election.

There are plenty of extraordinarily inappropriate clips of Maria on YouTube, but I'll close this bizarre post with one that's just plain creepy: her Marilyn Monroe-styl birthday ode to Senor Laporta...

Manager Jupp Heynckes suffers Bayern Munich?s first training ground injury of preseason

Bayern Munich opened their preseason at Lake Garda in northern Italy by arriving on a sailboat, but when the nautical fun ended, the realities of pushing too hard on the first day of training set in. Surprisingly, it wasn't Arjen Robben (or any other player for that matter) who got hurt in that first session, but manager Jupp Heynckes.

At 40 seconds into the video above, Heynckes tries to show the younger guys how its done and ends up with a pulled muscle and a limp. He shakes his head, realizing his mistake, and makes a mental note to just show his players a video of himself from 1973 next time.

Galaxy change date of September game

The Galaxy announced Tuesday they have moved up the date of their game against the Colorado Rapids by two days to Friday, Sept. 14, to better prepare themselves for a CONCACAF Champions League game in Puerto Rico the following week. The game originally was scheduled to be played Sunday, Sept. 16. and would have made the team's window to travel to Puerto Rico for a Sept. 19 game much smaller. “We have made this decision, with the support of Major League Soccer and our opponents the Colorado Rapids, for purely competitive reasons,” Galaxy Vice President Chris Klein in a statement released by the team.
