Sergio Busquets attempts to strengthen his head

Tired suffering momentary head injuries that force him to fall to the ground clutching his face, even when little or no contact is made to other parts of his body, Sergio Busquets is apparently doing head strengthening exercises during Spain's training camp. With Andres Iniesta as his spotter, Busquets appears to be piledriving his own head into the ground to try and harden it.

Whether this works or just makes things worse remains to be seen, but you have to admire his determination to better himself like this.

Vasquez is Klinsmann's 'right-hand' man

MANHATTAN BEACH -- No surprise that Martin Vasquez was included in Jurgen Klinsmann's staff for his first two camps as U.S. national team coach. No surprise, either, that his role will be more prominent than has been let on.

The former Chivas USA head coach will serve as Klinsmann's top assistant, the German legend acknowledged Monday, the same role he held during Klinsmann's 2008-09 tenure as Bayern Munich's manager.

“It was something in my mind already decided once I took the job that he will be my right hand ...,” Klinsmann said during a sitdown with L.A.-area soccer media. “It is definitely Martin Vasquez will play that role.”

Vasquez (Alhambra/Alhambra HS and Cal State L.A.), 47, a former midfielder who played for the U.S. and Mexican national teams, was dismissed last October after one season as Chivas' head coach after refusing to demote one of his assistants. He had been an assistant coach for the Goats from 2005 through 2008 and previously was on the Galaxy staff.

Chivas last year went 8-18-4 and finished last in Major League Soccer's Western Conference, not unexpected after the departure of the team's three foremost leaders and other key players.

Klinsmann, who has lived in Orange County since 1998, has an enduring friendship with the Mexico-born Vasquez, who played for four Mexican clubs and two in MLS during a 15-year professional playing career.

Hoffenheim apologize for trying to drown out Dortmund fans

No, that weird noise you hear mixed in with the traveling Borussia Dortmund fans singing isn't the sound of an alien invasion from a '50s B-movie, it's actually Hoffenheim's sneaky yet blatant attempt to drown out the visiting support during their 1-0 win on Saturday.

From the AP:

In a statement on the club's website Monday, Hoffenheim said one employee was responsible for producing the noise, described in his own words as a "remedy" to counteract abusive chants directed at the club's main financial backer Dietmar Hopp.

German daily Bild showed pictures of a speaker placed strategically under the visiting fans' block.

Hoffenheim earlier claimed a fan was responsible, saying in a statement that "allegations of a deliberate action from the host are unfounded."

However, in a later statement the club said it was taking "appropriate legal and disciplinary action against the employee" and that it was cooperating with the investigation from the Heidelberg police.

It's always that one rogue employee who just happens to have a speaker system and death ray sounds on his iPod. Soccer-Fans.de has pictures of the speakers just sitting out in the tunnel underneath the away stand and it really doesn't look like the kind of thing that a club employee would bring to work.

Anyway, even though Hoffenheim were caught in the act, they still beat the defending Bundesliga champs 1-0. So shutting up vocal away fans by making their ears bleed just might become a popular tactic around the world.

Drogba unconscious for 30 minutes after Ruddy collision

Chelsea came away from their home match against Norwich with a 3-1 win capped by goal from Juan Mata, making his club debut as a substitute, but it was Didier Drogba's scary collision with goalkeeper John Ruddy that was of far more concern.

Drogba had to be stretchered off in the 71st minute after Ruddy, who was later sent off for taking down Ramires in the box, caught him with an elbow under the chin. Drogba was knocked out immediately and limply hit the ground face-down. He appeared to be bleeding from the nose and/or mouth as team doctors carefully put him on the stretcher and, after a considerable amount of time, carried him off.

Dan Levene of the Fulham Chronicle said that Drogba was unconscious for 30 minutes and was taken to the hospital, but, thankfully, it's thought that he only has a concussion. And Andre Villas-Boas told the press that, "He is showing some good signs of recovery for us to be a little bit more tranquil."

UPDATE: Chelsea's official website reports that Drogba will be released from the hospital tonight and is suffering from a "mild concussion."

Here are the pictures of what happened...

Samir Nasri can?t stop ripping Arsenal

The same Samir Nasri who went on Twitter and called Arsenal fans "really disrespectful" for singing about his lack of commitment to the club just two weeks before his big money move to Man City can't stop taking pops at his former home.

First, he said City supporters are more passionate and Arsenal fans are less passionate since the move from Highbury to the Emirates (apparently he forgot how "disrespectful" they were two weeks earlier), even though he never once played at Highbury. And now, just like Wayne Rooney, he says the club he was with just couldn't match his ambition.

Nasri told L'Equipe (via Sky Sports):

"Why did I not sign a new contract with Arsenal? We started talking in October but by June I did not have any news and I didn't see anything happening in the transfer market. There comes a time when you have to invest.

"I have heard people say I have moved for money. I make a good living at City, that is true, but I am 24 years old and I have reached a turning point in my career and it was important that I joined a club with ambition.

"I believe I have more chance of winning titles at Manchester City than at Arsenal."

To be fair, recent history would suggest that Nasri isn't ripping Arsenal so much as he's just being honest. And maybe a public statment like this will finally get Arsene Wenger to stop worrying about loan deals for 30-year-olds and actually spend some of that 60 million he has in his pocket.

Dimitar Berbatov is?The Continental

Well hello there.

I see you caught me standing here acting casual. This is how I train for big matches. It's also how I lure in gorgeous Berba-babes like you. And it seems to be working. Ha-HA!

But aside from standing here and holding onto this net in a manner that makes you want to fondle my kneecaps, The Berba has been quite busy. ... No, I haven't been busy forwarding vulgar Internet videos to your private email account. That actually takes very little of my time, since my cousin Timitar Berbatov is the one who actually finds/films many of the strangely exciting videos himself. Especially the ones involving taxidermied goats wearing sunglasses and pictures of Justin Bieber's non-existent twin sister. Ha-HA!

Instead, I have been spending the vast majority of my time making sure Chicharito a.k.a. Little Berba is back in good health and ready to play instead of me. How have I been doing this? ... I know you didn't ask that, but I'm going to tell you anyway: I've been doing it by instructing him to massage curdled mayonnaise into his concussed head while singing made-up lyrics to smooth jazz songs. I also made him watch Timitar's videos with the goats and Bieber's non-existent twin sister. Chicharito said that all of this made him even dizzier. I told him that that's how we know it's working. Ha-HA!

Oh-OHHH! I think my fingers are stuck in this netting! Oh, this is terrible! I was just about to gently caress your face before you slapped me and/or sprayed me in the mouth with your giant canister of mace, but I am completely unable to dislodge them from this decidedly unsexy restraint! Oh, this is terrible. Oh! Oh, wait. I just had to let go of it.

Join us again next time for another chapter in the life of...The Continental...

MEXICO: Gunshots end Santos-Morelia

Scenes of terror and turmoil unfolded at Santos Laguna's Estadio Corona in the most newsworthy event in the Mexican Primera Division last weekend, as gunshots rang out during the Guerreros' showdown with Morelia.

Players dropped to the turf, then scrambled off the field, and fans escaped from the stands and onto the stadium floor or ducked under seats after a series of explosions -- from outside the Torreon stadium, it turned out -- went off late in the first half Saturday.

Nobody at the game was hurt, but the stadium was evacuated and the match suspended amid great chaos. No word yet on when it will be rescheduled.

According to Mexican media, the trouble began when a pickup truck, allegedly carrying drug-cartel members, sped through a checkpoint and was chased by police. Once the truck was cornered, outside the stadium, a gun battle broke out. Part of the stadium afterward was pockmarked by bullet holes.
  • THE TOP 3
1. UPGRADE AT TIGRES: UANL Tigres has one of the deepest, most talented sides in Mexican soccer and -- under former Chivas USA youth director Dennis te Kloese, who has brought to suburban Monterrey a handful of very promising players from Southern California -- possibly the country's best development set-up, although those connected to Pumas UNAM and Guadalajara can make convincing arguments otherwise.

No question, the club will contend for the Primera Division's fall Apertura title, especially once the attack catches up, as it should, to Brazilian manager Ricardo Ferretti's masterful defensive plan.

DTotD: Goalkeeper sends opponent flying after the whistle

Awesomely named CRA goalkeeper Abderafii Gassy offered the harshest of punishments to Youssef Agnaou for getting called offside in a Moroccan Cup match. The ankle-bending studs-up challenge came right after the whistle blew and got Gassy sent off.

If this happened to everyone who has ever been offside, Pippo Inzaghi would be a cripple by now.

WOMEN: A-Rod, Philly return to WPS final

Amy Rodriguez needed just one goal to put behind her a few stretch, completing Philadelphia's semifinal victory over Florida's magicJack to send the Independence to their second straight Women's Professional Soccer title game.

Rodriguez's 81st-minute goal in Saturday's 2-0 victory, which set up a showdown this weekend in Rochester, N.Y., with regular-season champ Western New York Flash, was just her third in a difficult season.

After a breakthrough, 12-goal campaign in 2010, she made just 10 appearances for Philly this season, starting six games and seeing only 641 minutes of action. Rodriguez's time was whittled by her duties with the U.S. national team and at the Women's World Cup, but the Independence's go-to forward last season was eclipsed by new arrivals Veronica Boquete -- WPS's Player of the Year -- and Tasha Kai, whose superb strike at the start of the second half provided the lead over magicJack.

The former USC All-American from Lake Forest is finding her game again, just in time.

“Amy wasn't in great form,” Philadelphia coach Paul Riley told ESPNW after Saturday's victory. “Amy, in the past few weeks, has worked on her game a lot. Today you could see.”

The Independence lost to Bay Area-based, since-dismantled FC Gold Pride, 4-0, in last year's WPS final -- all three goalscorers, Christine Sinclair, Marta and Kandace Wilson, are with the first-year Flash now -- and that defeat spurs them into Saturday's meeting with the first-year Flash (Fox Sports West, 1 p.m. PT).

“We were disappointed in ourselves” after last year's defeat in Hayward, Rodriguez told ESPNW. “We had worked so hard during the season, and then that last game was unfortunate. This game was a steppingstone. Our goal is to make it to the championship and, obviously, to bring home the trophy.”

Cologne ultras threw cups of feces at Schalke fans

Schalke's Lewis Holtby runs from the feces.

After losing their Bundesliga season opener 3-0 to Wolfsburg and then traveling to Schalke to lose 5-1 in their second game, a group of Cologne ultras apparently decided to share their misery in the grossest way possible: throwing cups of urine and feces at rival fans.

From the AFP:

According to security staff at Schalke's stadium in Gelsenkirchen, a small group of Cologne ultras are responsible for throwing the cups during the home team's 5-1 win.

Those hit by the disgusting missiles included fans from both teams.

Oh no! Rule No. 1 of throwing cups of feces is to be sure you don't hit anyone on your side with friendly fire. Rule No. 2 is to always wash your hands after throwing.

Police are looking at video tape of the crowd from Saturday's match at Schalke's Veltins Arena to identify those responsible and two fans are reported to have already been arrested.

A witness is reported to have seen one man put faeces in a beer cup, while two others filled their cups with urine before hurling them at Schalke fans.

That poor witness.

Of course, this kind of thing happens all the time to U.S. fans who attended matches against Mexico and we probably shouldn't be too surprised to hear about scat action in Germany. But this is still horrifying.

David Villa?s beautiful Supercopa goal to mark Cesc signing

In case last season's Clasico overload combined with a mind-numbing summer made you forget just how awesome it is when Real Madrid and Barcelona play each other, this golazo from David Villa should quickly remind you.

Real were in control for much of the first 45 minutes of the Supercopa, with Mesut Ozil scoring in the 13th minute. But since one of the certainties of life is Barcelona scoring goals, David Villa flung a shot from the edge of the box that curled into the far corner to equalize. Then in added time just before the break, Lionel Messi made it 2-1 because that's what Lionel Messi does.

And just as an added kick in the groin, Barcelona finally finished up the acquisition of Cesc "Barca DNA" Fabregas while all this was happening. And he could make his debut for the club in the Supercopa second leg.

UPDATE: Xabi Alonso came up with an equalizer in the second half and probably said, "Cesc who?" after he scored it.

LOCALS: Blues miss USL Pro final four

The L.A. Blues' long, hard, at times debilitating first campaign fell well short of the goal, their season ending with Friday's loss at Harrisburg, Pa., in a USL Pro playoff opener.

The Blues won four of their first six matches and only four of their final 19 as a heavily back-loaded schedule, iffy team chemistry, struggles to finish chances and an abrupt alteration of style -- following Argentine playmaker Walter Gaitan's June departure -- conspired to derail a talented side.

They wrapped the season 8-8-9 for 33 points, the seventh-best total in the 12-team, third-division competition, and finished third in the National Division after having a way-outside shot to win the group heading into the final week of the regular season. Only three teams, not counting the trio of Puerto Rico-based clubs booted from the league in May for financial reasons, won fewer games than the Blues.

“Disappointing. But what can you say?” head coach Charlie Naimo said after the 3-2 defeat to the Harrisburg City Islanders, who will play Friday at Rochester in the National Division final. “Everybody enjoins to be successful, but at the end of the day, only one team can be.

“I think we could have been better, and I think we talent-wise were as good as most at times, we just couldn't make our own luck.”

A sinister moment between Guardiola and Mourinho, part II

If you thought a summer apart would soften Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho's feelings for each other, this picture should pretty much squash any optimism you still have and let you know that the unicorns are all dead.

Just before the first leg of the Supercopa, which ended in 2-2 draw, Guardiola and Mourinho made quick, yet agonizing work of their obligatory pre-match handshake. Pep, dressed like a Miami based Mormon recruiter, gave Mourinho a death stare while Jose, wearing Darth Vader's golf outfit, refused to make eye contact so as not to succumb to his thinly veiled urge to slap his rival in his bald head until his hands fall off.

Considering the fact that these two could face each other up to eight times this season, this could seem like a loving embrace compared to the unspeakable horrors they will perform upon each other come the end of May.
